NAS under $250

Budget (including currency): $250 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: NAS, will likely use Truenas. 

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 

Will be using Truenas for SMB and general network file storage. Also I plan on running docker containers with Bitwarden password manager. Is the CPU in the parts list powerful enough for all of this?

Yea that will work fine for a nas. If you want cheaper you can start hunting ebay for used parts. You could get something like a c222 board, a xeon e3 and some cheap ddr3 for about $100 bucks if your looking for deals.

You could save a tiny bit (and get better performance, 6 cores instead of 4, although I'm not sure it matters) by going 5600G

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.

He/Him - I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. If you want to save money, buy a used older Core i3, like an 8th gen (Or look at used AMD G series CPUs), and a used motherboard to go with it. Get your PSU and memory new.

im concerned about the bios issue that Pcpartpicker brings up. I dont have another ryzen board available. I have an 8700k/3070ti but I cant flash a ryzen bios. At least i dont think so?

I need to run password managers through bitwarden(or some similar service) for 4 people. No other use cases for docker, at least for now, im still new to all nas stuff so finding use cases will take a bit.

Bios Issues can usually be sorted by contacting/phoning the retailer and asking them to update the Bios before shipping.
