I just did an upgrade, well, it started as an upgrade and turned into my legit dream PC. (let me know if this is wrong section for this)

But, now I have all of my old parts laying out. Trying to decide if it makes more sense to throw these in an old case I have (listed in PCpartpicker url), or try to sell individually. I feel like a working PC with those parts is more valuable (and less hassle), but curious if anyone has recommendations?

Parts:

Ryzen 7 2700X

ASUS ROG Crosshair VII

970Pro NVME (512)

WD BLack 4tb

32GB Corsair Vengeance (2 different speeds, not sure how I managed that back in 2018)

ASUS ROG RX580 OC

Seasonic Titanium Prime 650

It's hard to give a concrete answer on this, because it depends on your local used market. I would generally expect to be able to sell the individual components for more than the complete system, but the challenge would be in finding people willing to take all my parts. Parting your system out individually might leave you hanging on to a case or drive for months, especially if you're in an area where the used PC hardware community is less vibrant.

If your local used market is very active though, it might be worth trying to part things out, especially if you have most of the boxes for those components left. Just be aware that you might be left with a drive that nobody wants.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Very good point. I am in a mid-sized market (Cincinnati) and may even be willing to ship, but, Marketplace/etc is such a pain in the butt, lol.

Ultimately I do want to get the most money I can out of this (and my other older build) as it was part of the justification for completely updated to top of the line nextgen parts.

Sell it individually then.

I mean I don't, I just transfer my old drives to my new system to be honest (that includes the ticking time bomb that is my 3TB Barracuda). I personally wouldn't due to:

  • the cost of a used drive on the used market, which wouldn't make it worth my time
  • the potential security risk

But if you aren't handling sensitive data on that particular drive and/or format that disk well to make sure there's no easily-recoverable stuff, there's conceivably not too much to worry about, especially considering that most people don't want your data. In any case a used drive is going to be far more easy to sell as part of a completed system than solo, and having a drive ready to go could be a value add for someone looking to buy a cheap used PC.

I feel ya, and for clarification, my 2018 build had this 512 970 Pro in it, which I upgraded to a 980 Pro 1tb. The 512 got relegated to a drawer collecting dust. And I used to get a new 4tb drive with each build, but for my newest build, I did transfer over my 980 Pro, and my 870 Evo (2.5), along with adding a 980 Pro 2tb. Plus I moved over my internal HDD and still have two ancient External HDD (a 4tb and 2tb).

Once I (securely) wipe the drives in the old systems, I'm not overly worried about any info on there, I mean, if you're dedicated enough you could recover data sure, but meh....

I mostly want less aggravation. But it would behoove me to try to realistically estimate what I could get for parts separately vs what I could get for the full build. Also would factor in the PITA cost of doing it separately.

Oh yea, I also am going to try to get rid of my FX8350 (?lol) build that has a... R9 270 in it... That I build in 2011 maybe? lol
