Curved VA vs Flat IPS panel

Beyonder8335r
Go to solution Solved by Dedayog,

Curved VA is just fine.  Especially larger sizes.

Hello, since I'm planning on upgrading my PC this year, I'm planning on making the jump from 1080 to 1440p. However, I'm debating between going for 27" flat IPS displays, and 27inch curved VA displays. I'm planning on running duals, primarily for gaming, though I do some video content creation on the side. I've heard that VA can be prone to ghosting and such, however currently I run a VA and haven't noticed issues. Basically, I'm trying to decide if the IPS or curved screen would have more value.

Dont use a curved display for content creation. Use what the audience is using which will be flat displays.

I may be biased though as curved displays in my opinion are the dummest gimmick to sell monitors lately. Its provides zero illusion of imersiveness at the tiny desk scale that they are .

Fair point on the audience bit. Personally I have heard from a couple of guys I know that have a curved that it’s really nice, but it’s probably down to preference.

I can't disagree with her, as I use curved UW at home and at work.  Curved works very well for me, as I have tried to go to flat UW.  I do not like having to adjust my vision noticeably at the far edges with a flat UW.

27" though, is probably in that odd zone of it may help or it may just be more of a gimmick. Only you can decide that.

Curved VA is cool, the problem is the color and ghosting, the VA will likely not have the same color quality as an IPS.

This is no longer true for the latest generation of VA panels used in the Samsung Odyssey G7 series and higher.

The VA panel viewing angle is still not as good as IPS, but the color quality is comparable or even better, and ghosting is not an issue anymore.

Then don't say "VA monitors", but "G7 monitors", since only those are good. You're talking about quite expensive models when most people go for budget oriented ones, and there are tons of 1440p curved VA monitors.

The others all have ghosting, the color vibrancy is superior on the IPS, no matter how well you try to calibrate a VA.

Definitely looks like a big difference for the color of IPS. On my current VA I’ve never really noticed ghosting, but it seems like IPS would be an upgrade. That said, I think a curve would also be nice, probably just depends which I can get a better deal on tbh.

I've used different VAs and IPSs, I think the yellows are the color where you notice more the difference.

Mine only has noticeable ghosting in some games with fast moving dark objects.

G7, Neo G7, Neo G8 and G9 and Neo G9 - now that's a mouthful. There's also a better tuned VA that don't have as bad smearing and not very noticeable ghosting even if it's not 4ms response time.

The colour part also not true. IPS can have colour accuracy but colour vibrancy also tie to contrast (that's how OLED get colours pop despite not having very good colour volume) and VA do easily beat IPS in that regard (but in practice, any display can have any vibrancy as you want, by just cranking up the saturation or use unclamped WCG)

It depends. All type of panel have great to worst. The only don't have good image quality is TN panel.

It is no longer accurate to say that VA is less vibrant.

Try the Odyssey Neo G7, Neo G8, and Neo G9,which use the most recent generation of VA panels, and you will notice that they can produce excellent display quality, even better than many IPS panels on the market today.

The only area where IPS still outperforms VA is viewing angle, where VA is still unsuitable for screen sharing.

There is no viewing angle issue at scales that small. Dont get me wrong if the screen was the size of a building then sure. But i highly doubt were talkimg about any sort of omnimax effect on a tiny little screen on a desk.

But then again curved screens seem somehow new to a lot of people and trying to convince them otherwise to not buy gimmicks isnt really going to yeild results if a bunch of youtube peraonalities already sold them on the gimmick.

The VA viewing angle still looks worse than IPS, but it has no impact on usage as long as you use it alone. However, IPS is still superior for screen sharing. I owned both the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 and the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 which using latest generation of VA panel, I also owned some IPS panels monitor such as the LG 34GN850 and the AOC 24G2SP. I can tell latest VA panel viewing panel still not in same level as IPS.

Curve is something I've always preferred, especially on Ultrawide, Super Ultrawide or larger screen. To me, it is not a gimmick; It works with a longer or larger screen to make it easier to see everything at once. Curve also provides an immersive experience and is ideal for gaming. I don't have a problem with productivity also as I don't get any distortion image in curve screen.

Curve is something I've always preferred, especially on Ultrawide, Super Ultrawide or larger screen. To me, it is not a gimmick; It works with a longer or larger screen to make it easier to see everything at once. Curve also provides an immersive experience and is ideal for gaming. I don't have a problem with productivity also as I don't get any distortion image in curve screen.

trying to convince them otherwise to not buy gimmicks isnt really going to yeild results if a bunch of youtube peraonalities already sold them on the gimmick.

I guarantee you, viewing is going to be an issue on a traditional VA without any WVA film. If it's larger than 24 inches, you'll see some colour shift around the edge a 100 percent (actually, you can see a little on 24 inches too)
