Let me start off by saying I am to blame for downloading sketchy files, after downloading and installing cracked adobe illustrator windows defender said there was a Trojan I quickly deleted everything ran Malwarebytes and everything comes back clean. My question is since I was already planning to upgrade my m.2 ssd (obviously reinstalling windows) would it be safe to save any of my files on an external drive and not risk reinfecting my computer. Also any additional advice for both malware prevention/cleaning and a recommended m.2 is welcome

Don't download cracked or pirated software. It's A, illegal (piracy) and B ,they can give you things other than what you wanted

Trojans are mostly harmless by themselves. They do however let viruses and other nasties in so that is why you usually want to reformat the drive after you have been exposed. If you caught it right away, you probably are fine but better to be safe than sorry. Also, you should know better than to download that stuff.

Pretty much this.

However in all fairness adobe cracking when you have a license is something I see through the fingers cuz they keep removing features in new ones or breaking plugins by force :p.

Without animate 2015 and photoshop 2015 an entire 300 people company I know simply goes out of bussiness 😛

I know I’ve been pretty safe about downloading stuff online but I slipped up won’t be happening again but do you think it’d be safe to backup any of my old illustrator files and other stuff or should I kiss it goodbye

I don't think those would be infected. The usual suspects are word, excel, powerpoint and windows in general. Just make sure to have virus protection on the next time you access those files and folders. Back them up to an external drive, then wipe your main drive and install a fresh copy of windows. Good luck

i recommend you if you not have the money or dont want to spend it instead of downloading malware to your pc  Just use https://alternativeto.net/ and  Free filter you always find something good for free. in some cases a better software like Davinci resolve it don't crash like Premier in my Pc (I heard multiple people complain about this). some alternates are equal and opposite that's the only problem like gimp and Photoshop both can do same stuff but both do in a totally different manner have a huge learning curve for both.  Piracy is bad In multiple ways. One of them is obviously the trojans that you get.

Download superantispyware, RKillx64, Kaspersky TDSS, ESET Online, McAfee Stinger x64, you already have MBAM.

Run Rkill first, then TDSS, then Stinger (quickest ones), then run SuperAntispyware, Eset Online (parallel) these may take longer suggest overnight.

Your default saves are in C:\Users\<yourname>\, alternatively you can run them on the users folder first, shorter process, than doing the whole drives, so you can do your backup first. Otherwise if you have custom folders you want to run those through the AV scans also.

PS: Gimp is a stunted but free version of Photoshop BTW but has versions for both Win & Linux.
