My MoBo audio jack stopped working. Can audio be through USB? How?

I don't remember the details but I could get audio out in Linux using a USB DAC (Fiio Q1 Mk1) when I had a faulty onboard audio but I couldn't in Windows.

 

 

USB soundcard worked in Windows as well. I believe those have built-in "codecs" and a dac. Unlike my USB DAC.
