RTX 3090 w/ i9-9900K - HIGH CPU usage

4lch3my

Hey gang. First post here and already looking for help... *sigh*, let me get right in to it.

I have a i9-9900k with a Gigabyte Z390 AORUS Pro, 32GBs of RAM and a new edition to my RIG, a massive founders' edition nVidia RTX 3090. I have installed all drivers up to date, PC running silent (Thanks to the water cooled CPU), perfect temp. Only issue is that the CPU in games (tested: GoW,MC,Fortnite) runs very very high, at least 70-80% utilization even though the games are set to use the nVidia card instead (duh).

I have reinstalled drivers, removed and re-added card, restarted many times, but the issue consists. I have read only that there might be some bottlenecks (10-12%?) with this CPU, but before with my RTX 2080S I did not have any issues.

Any ideas on how to proceed? Did I "mess up"? Or just need to change some settings around somewhere what I am not aware of.

Thank you in advance! All the help needed what I can get, so I don't go financially bankrupt haha

Also sorry if I posted in the wrong thread, please let me know and I will move this!

it is becasue you have a cpu bottleneck. it is not a issue unless you are note getting the performance that you want

Thank you, but I see people testing multiple games with the CPU/GPU combo and getting only 30-40% utilization on the CPU itself. Am I missing something? Or do I really need to upgrade everything for an RTX 3090?

An example would be this video:

the bottleneck when compared to the fastest cpu (13900k) is closer to 35%, the cpu doesn't have to hit 100% as long as the gpu is under 100% because of the cpu, depends on the game of course, spiderman being the worst case scenario atm, my 9900k turn time is also longer on something as trivial as midnight suns.

just look at the difference between the 5800x3d/12900k and the 10700k

all this said, i wouldnt upgrade for a 3090, just ride it out til next gpu

Thank you, but please don't tell me this is normal. Using 92% of my CPU just because of this bottleneck? That is a little weird for me. And this is only in the loading screen/menu of the game. Any further help/ideas?

I have the exact same rig. Fps is lower with the 9900k than something better but runs well on mw2.
I did swap back to a 1440p monitor though, not sure what you are on.
Only doing a slight overclock of 4.6 on it and running the gpu stock. Enough power left over to record as well.

for something like cod, it's normal, i have 60% usage in lost ark (and thats at 4k), imagine cod is worse.

that’s not how it works. The CPU in games is used for CPU tasks and the GPU is for GPU tasks. What could be set to be used by the game in GPU tasks is the iGPU, which has nothing to do with CPU utilization.

This is normal, the only way you’re gonna alleviate that is by upgrading to either a better CPU (which will process tasks faster) or a higher-resolution monitor (which is gonna lower the number of frames the GPU produces and sends to the CPU)

And that has nothing to do with GPU at all, just CPU- it’s processing the game’s loading sequence, which is gonna use a lot of CPU. only way to get rid of THAT is to get a better CPU, a higher-res monitor will not help at all with utilization in the loading screen.

Thank you for all the replies. It seems that the only great issue is with Fortnite, all other games and apps (Including Cinema4D,After Effects, Premiere Pro and Blender) do not suffer from this as much or at all.

Highly appreciate the feedback, will be upgrading the rest of the system in the New Year!
