Hello all,

I'm in the market for a DSLR, it is also important to note it will be my first DSLR for that matter, and my budget is around $500 to $700. Also an aftermarket microphone is important to me so probably another $250 budget for that on top of the $500 - $700.

90% of the time will be used filming video, but stills are also important which is why I dismissed going with a dedicated video camera in the first place.

Also to note I won't be doing any filming in the dark. I have a light box and lighting equipment for the indoors but most filming will take place during the day.

Thank you for the help guys!!!

T3i, t4i, t5i, Nikon 5200

Afaik D5200 is amazing in low light video, but canons are considered better for video in general so I agree with your suggestion

Seems the D5200 is looking pretty good right about now.... but how about an external mic?

You should definitely get the Rode VideoMic Pro.  It is favorite among many DSLR shooters and has a +20dB setting that helps compensate for the DSLR's crappy microphone amp.

Also if are still considering the Canon T3i you should look into Magic Lantern.  It opens up a lot more settings for the camera, but from what I've seen the Nikon D5200 has better video quality.

I also shoot primarily video, I have been shooting with the 60D.

For your budget I suggest a Canon rebel t4i or t5i but since these are entry level DSLR's please note that ISO performance is not the best.  I own both the t3i and 60D so I see where Canon screws you over with the lower ends. Even though I could only afford a used 60D body  for 650 thats what I went with (2 years ago). If you really could hold off the 70D would be a god camera for you. It has quick and clean autofocus for video that no other high end DSLR has in the canon line up (like the 5D Miii which is the one made for video professionals).

Stick with Canon for video, Nikon is known to have a green tint to its video.

I would suggest the t3i/t4i etc whatever you find for a good price they are all similar and for the mic I would go with a rode videomic pro.
