3400g +1650S underperforming

Hanabispp

Hello, my friend has the following specs on his computer:

Ryzen 5 3400G

Asrock B550M-HDV Mobo (the page states that the 3400G is supported despite the zen+ architecture, has BIOS version 1.90)

Teamgroup T-Force Dark Z 2x8 3600MHz CL18, but running at 2933MHz, 1.35v and CL18 I believe, since anything higher than that, even the XMP profiles would result in a crash

EVGA SC Ultra GTX 1650 Super

500GB Samsung 980 pro or 970 EVO, not sure about this one, happened even on other boot drives so not the issue anyway

600W gold TT power supply

So the issue is basically that any game that my friend tries to run, has really low FPS, even for the specs.

Some examples of this are:

Cyberpunk 2077 2-15 fps lowest settings, AMD FSR 2.1 in performance mode in 720p

Need For Speed Unbound 5-25 fps lowest settings AMD FSR performance mode 1080p

Monster Hunter World 20-50 fps mid/low settings 1080p

And basically any other game he tries to run, he has to turn the graphics to the lowest setting so that it becomes playable.

A list of observations:

- We have checked other benchmarks and videos running the exact same CPU + GPU combo while getting way better performance

- The iGPU is disabled in BIOS

- We have double-checked that the 1650s is indeed the one processing the game and not the integrated Vega 11

- The GPU doesn't seem to draw more than 100W and seems to stick around 60W-90W most of the time, not sure if that is normal or not though, the card boosts up to around 1900MHz and 6000Mhz on the memory

- The CPU boosts up around 3900-4000MHz while drawing less than 40W

- None of the components overheat, they always stay bellow 75 degrees

- The memory controller on 3400G is kinda lame so that is probably the cause for the low clocks on the RAM

- The RAM Sticks are indeed in Dual-Channel

Possible causes I have thought of are:

- CPU tanking performance because of poor compatibility with B550 chipset and the lower clocks on the RAM

- Faulty RAM, which would explain the issue with the XMP profile

- Memory leak????

- Some issue with mobo? idk

Any speculation is welcome, we can also perform some tests if needed, we know that replacing the CPU is probably the right move anyway but we want to make sure that the pc won't perform like a pentium 4 even after the upgrade.

@Hanabispp

1. Flash the latest BIOS (2.20, 2.30). 1.80 is bad (Agesa 1202).

2. Use the latest chipset drivers: https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am4/b550

3. Use the latest CPU (Vega) drivers: https://www.amd.com/en/support/apu/amd-ryzen-processors/amd-ryzen-5-desktop-processors-radeon-vega-graphics/amd-ryzen-5-1

4. Update other drivers using IoBit Driver Booster

5. Retest.

4. Dont use it because that usually installs the wrong drivers

But other than that I do recommend all you said here.

What's your claim based on? Based on personal experience with how many systems?

Any universal driver installer ive ever used and idk 1000+? Job I worked at had a paid version we were supposed to use and it sometimes helped but often it did more harm than good. I think in my 2 years working we had 7 different ones?

I have a question, why would update the iGPU vega drivers help in this case? Having multiply gpu drivers in a single system causes issues, no? And we are not using the iGPU nor a AMD gpu, so the adrenalin drivers won't do much

The integrated gpu is a part of the 3400G, it's on the same infinity fabric, a part of that CPU. The drivers aren't just GPU drivers, they are for the whole APU. If the igpu is disabled, the driver for that part won't be installed.
