Will this system work without a BIOS update, or is that impossible to determine?

Ryzen 5 4600g and 

MSI MPG B550 Gaming plus AM4

Let me know if any more info is needed. Thanks for the help!

I dont really want to update BIOS due to the risk of bricking stuff. Another option for me is the GIGABYTE B450

Should be fine, I'd challenge you to find a B550 that doesn't have a recent enough BIOS for 4000 series

Depends on the BIOS version you have now. You need v11 (1.1 really).  See below link.  It's on page 4 of 6.  The only way you'd have a problem is if your board shipped with v10/1.0.
