I would save any money you get between now and then and when you have this money then ask. do you honestly need a tablet or laptop for school? Or would it just be nice to have. I only ask because I didn't need one until college in my linux classes where I need to work on windows and linux simultaneously. I would say save your money you have a decent amount there would suck to spend it on a 780 or 290 only to have new GPUs to be released in Q4.

Didn't know you were from Canada....every blasted thing is more expensive in Canada. Maybe you cold look at one of these...

Better yet find out if NCIX is having a sale and go there and see what deals you could get for your money. Now really is not a good time to purchase anything unless you really need it.

My situation was different from yours but i say save any money you have now and buy a decent GPU in few months when the price drops and also a mid-spec laptop for your school if you really need it. But honestly it is better to use a pen and paper for your schoolwork until college.

And if you do decide you can not live without a laptop and want to buy one. Get one with integrated GPU and not ones with a dedicated GPU they are relatively expensive, you can save the rest of the money for a decent upgrade. You don't need a lot of horsepower for basic schoolwork.

Even the tablets mentioned are more than enough for basic word-processing and schoolwork as long as you have an attachable keyboard for fast typing.

Please don't buy chromebook. I have never seen an electronic device that is more wast of money. You are basically can't do anything unless you have a fast internet connection.

For a student they are great. You can still listen to music/play videos/do documents  and certain apps while offline and store/access usb + sd

If he is researching things then he will have the internet anyway, and most people do not use their laptop unless they are using the internet, they are a great student device if I do say so myself,

Also apps can now have offline modes

I agree they are not bad as a portable handheld for school, but i believe he is planing to use it for other things than school work.

If he is only going to be using it for school work and for media and internet browsing only. I believe it is a better option than most tablets. i.e if he does not mind the added weight, internet connection necessity (for some functions) and space it occupies.

Personally i do not like any cloud based system and i am confident i never will in the future unless some major issues are fixed. I don't like to have to have any device that requires internet connection to function fully.

Off topic but, I like to be in-charge of my personal data. I don't want Google or any other entity scanning my e-mails or any other digital data i generate for advertisement purposes or for any other "bright" idea they have this week.

I understand what you are saying, I was assuming he was using his desktop for games/video editing and his main work. I think he just wanted a laptop to take notes at school and access the web  - instead of spending all his money on a meh laptop that wont do much as it wont be very powerful for his budget, he could get a chromebook for note taking in class, and spend money on a GPU so he can get some good gaming in at home

Off topic too, cloud personally doesnt bother me, if google really want to read all my emails there are welcome too it. They will see that I like buying computer parts and buying things from steam. I honestly have no data that I wouldnt freely hand to anybody in person. Frankly with all that NSA stuff they probably have all of your information anyway. Cloud is a convenient way to back up data, I personally hate carrying memory sticks, they can corrupt/get damaged/lost,

For note taking and other basic operations chromebook is the best bang for your buck. Rather than getting a low end laptop for 300$ it is better to get a chrome book and spend the rest of the money on a decent GPU upgrade.

Off topic, i will never give any corporation or entity any data on me unless i am legally obligated to do so. I do not use any cloud backup, i use a NAS that is at a different location.

I think that might be your best option. I have the Nexus 7, which is pretty damn good. The Tegra Note 7 isn't a bad option either for taking it to class since it has the stylus for classes where typing notes isn't as effective (writing out equations in math, perhaps?).

Just out of curiosity, are you 100% sure you'll be able to use a tablet/laptop during class at your high school? If so, cool. I remember when I was back in high school, and the policy was basically that personal electronic devices were banned during class, unless they came from the school itself.

Thats a good point about the tegra, i think that and its lower price sells it for me. I know i can use it during spares and stuff and i think some teachers allow it wile others dont but in taking computerclasses so im sure i could during that. (They have dual monitors setups there its sick)

In honesty all i want is to watch movies on the go with no connection, basic browsing, to be able to type up stuff, and if i had a android table i could do this plus play games so i will prob get a tegra note7 or nexus 7 and a kb

Get the cheapest garbage laptop you can (Chrome book with disc load slot) and you'll be completely fine.

The thing about laptops is, if you're not using it for intense gaming, and you don't NEED a convertable, then the cheapest shit you can get works just as good as the best when it comes to web browsing watching movies and playing crappy games like angry bird.

Think about the fact you're also in 9th grade (not sure how it differs from america to canada) but here 9th grade is freshman in highschool with four years left before college. Don't get a laptop for highschool work. Tons of teachers won't even let you use it in the first place. In addition to that, a lot of teachers have notes and things organized differently, and you can only format a word document so many different ways. It ends up being more of an inhibitor then it does a beneficial thing to have.

Just keep extremely organized note books, and keep your desktop a powerhouse that does anything you need. If you want to watch movies on the go, buy a used portable dvd player. They're like 50$ and work fine. Rip any movie you want to a disc an watch it there. The battery life on them is much better then a laptop too, at least mine lasted like two days before dying. and this was like 5 years ago.
