What year is it!? Looking for a very specific bluray drive (external)

Mark Kaine
Go to solution Solved by Thomas4,

Amazon has the internal drive and and a selection of external drive bays to put it in.

To be precise:

Mediatek chipset and a +6 read offset.

I found very few internal drives that fulfill this requirement but I don't really know how i should use such a drive,  i would need to built a new pc basically,  that's not really feasible?

So an external drive would be preferable.

LG BE16NU50 and BH14NS40 would be such drives but I can't find them anywhere unfortunately...

i know its a long shot, but is there a site where i could look this up?

LG WH16NS40 Super Multi Blue Internal SATA 16x Blu-ray Disc Rewriter. And from what i glanced over on LG's website they're basically the same thing without the drive bay, of course.

I didn't research but B&H should offer the same choices.

The only difference between the external and internal drive is that there's a board that the SATA cable plugs into to convert it to USB.

Eh, i can't find that info either cause I don't know what all the abbreviations mean... does this read/write 50GB discs or even 100GB? Just not sure what discs i should buy...

Yes, you can use up to 4 layer Blu-Ray Discs

LG's list of recommended Blu-Ray disks

WRITE ONCE - Each layer can hold up to 25GB

  • BD-R SL : Sony, Panasonic. (25GB capacity)
  • BD-R DL : Panasonic. 50GB
  • BD-R XL (3 Layer)/ XL (4 Layer) : TDK. (75/100GB capacity)
  • BD-R SL LTH : Taiyo Yuden. (25GB capacity)

RE-EDITABLE: Theses are disks that you can add information to, but can not erase the information already present on the disk

  • BD-RE SL : Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, Verbatim, Sony. (25GB capacity)
  • BD-RE DL/XL (3 Layer) : Panasonic. (75GB capacity)

I didn't include any of the other types of disks you can use with the drive.

Thanks so much, no wonder i was getting confused with those... I'll just get some 25GB to test since these brands are all pretty much unavailable (except verbatim)
