Hello,

I picked candidates for second stick of RAM to a PC but maybe I didn't foresee something and I would like to make sure if it will be compatible.

Current basic specs:

  • MOBO: ASUS H170M-PLUS
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6700
  • RAM: 1x ADATA 16GB DDR4 2666MHz CL19 (AD4U2666716G19-SGN)

Candidates for second stick:

  • Patriot 16GB 2666MHz CL19 Signature (PSD416G26662)

  • GOODRAM 16GB 2666MHz CL19 (GR2666D464L19/16G or GR2666D464L19S/16G - I don't know the difference)

  • Crucial 16GB 2666MHz (CT16G4DFRA266)

Note: current RAM is not on QVL and there is no RAM with 2666MHz and CL19 on QVL

The motherboard will have a QVL. That is a list of memory that has been tested by the manufacturer of the motherboard. Either the cpu or the motherboard can have various limitations on memory speed.  It has to comply with both.  That is a high end cpu on a low end board, so the limitations of the motherboard are likely to be tighter.  Might want to look there first.  Generally the QVL isn’t super important for intel systems though because everyone tests against intel.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Thanks! The thing is - there is no RAM on any of that QVLs on https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/h170m-plus/helpdesk_qvl/ (for example newest one: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/B150M-A_M2/Non-Z170_DDR4_4DIMM_memory_QVL_report161222.pdf) that has timing CL19. That is pretty unusual RAM.

That’s bizarre.  It’s not unoften the ONLY thing on the QVLs.  You can’t run a motherboard without ram

I think your advice / joke went over my head. Do you think I should try with any RAM with 2666MHz  and different CL from that list or with any of that RAMs from my local shop (listed in first post)
