How can I connect a 4 pin fan to a 3 pin connector?

TaklaPro

So, I've got a SONY VaioBook from 2012, my laptop fan is pretty much broken and doesn't work, I've replaced the thermal paste so I can atleast use this without instantly overheating. I've got a spare fan from a laptop but I want to fit that fan to this one and this has a 3 pin connector and the fan I want to connect is a 4 pin one! Please help cuz I don't want to spend any money cuz you know I am a teenager and I don't have any money to spend ;(

User-added imageLike so?

EDIT - Sorry missed that it's laptop, not desktop.

There is a very good chance you won't be able to use a fan not made for the laptop you are working on.

You would potentially be getting the pin out for the connector and soldering the old connector to the new fan to make it work.

What model is the laptop?  The easiest thing would be to buy a replacement fan.

It's a SVF15 something, I know I can literally buy a replacement fan but I don't wanna do that as I don't have any money yet to spend! I want a quick solution cuz I cannot even search something on this thing without it going on its knees

A 4 pin fan is PWM. A 3 pin fan is DC. DC fans and PWM fans work differently. The 4th pin is your PWM signal. Without this if the fan works, it'll most likely be at full speed all the time. It's either going to be full speed or no speed.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Parts are cheap though.

Do you have a soldering Iron?  The price of soldering gear is more than the fan.

I do have a soldering iron. That is actually not the correct fan, I already looked at it on ebay but I don't wanna spend... Is there a Chad way to do it 💀💀

So If I wanna test that... How do I just ninja it to the connector cuz I don't know the correct sequence

As long as it uses a normal fan header, it only goes on 1 way. They are keyed to go on one way only. https://noctua.at/en/can-i-run-4-pin-pwm-fans-on-3-pin-fan-headers

It's a laptop fan, not a desktop fan.

Unless he buys a compatible fan as a replacement, he is looking at soldering wires.

I tried it, it worked, connected the black to the black, yellow to the yellow and blue to the red and left the white wire alone, it is working at max speed but the bearings on my old one were broken and that made a noise so bad, I can wake up my parents in the  room next to me by that, now it's literally very very quiet, and it stays way cooler, 60*C at max and it was reaching around 90*C before!!!!!!! Thanks
