Laster Printer Keeps Adding a Horizontal Line When Using Double Sided Printing

Hello All, I'm trying to figure this out, and have been getting a little frustrated, hopefully this is the right area of the forum.

I have a Brother laser printer (model dcp-L2540DW), and for some time, when I print doubled sided documents, there is a horizontal black line that appears toward the top of the first page. It has happened across multiple toner cartridges, some worse then others. When I remove the toner, I can see the line of toner on the drum. I clean off any toner that is there, and put it back. Then when I print a two page document with the double sided printing option, that line appears again. The pictures attached show what I'm talking about.

Just right now, I cleaned off the drum once more, and installed a brand new toner cartridge, and the problem persists. Is it possible that the drum is defective?

I print alot of back and white documents, and at first it didnt bother me, but its getting slightly annoying now. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Is it likely that the drum is defective only when you're printing two sided?

I'd mess with the driver options and see if the printer speaks postscript or some version of PCL or whatever and use a different driver to see if the smear goes away.

Hm, what paper size is that?  Does it also smear when you print in landscape?

I suspect when the printer flips over the paper to print on the other side there is a roller with toner that is leaving a line/trail on the other side.

Is the line always in the same place in respect to the paper?

Hello, I'm very sorry for such a delayed reply, life just got busy and the little things got pushed aside.

Yes, it does only do this when using double sided printing. The paper size 8.5x11, and good question about landscape printing. When doing a double sided document in landscape, I get the same result, the black line is on the same place it has been.

The line is definitely always in the same spot on the page. Interesting thought about the roller, that would make sense. The drum is clean, I just checked it very carefully. Where would this roller be? Is it more in the depths of the printer? This seems like it could lead to a solution.
