Are Ryzen "X" versions worth it?

Taking MSRP as the baseline (and rounding up):

  • 7600X = $300
  • 7700 = $330

So for $30 extra we could get 2 more cores on a non X version

Which one would you pick and why?

No the X variants are a scam.

Look at the 5600 vs the 5600x. The "X" versions are just to milk early adopters

Ryzen 7 7700 isn't (officially) a thing, at least not yet. If it did exist, the difference between those two would be the 6 or 8 cores, not the x. If you're going to compare a hypothetical 7700, compare it to the 7700x.

Historically, that would likely just be a minor drop in base/boost clockspeeds.

*edit*

Just looked and the leaks are basically confirming what I thought, 100Mhz drop compared to 7700x.

So the question is still between a 6 core (7600x) or 8 core (7700/7700x) which comes down to your needs.

The value proposition for the 6 and 8 core Zen4 parts is still not great, IMO. However, one could say if you invest in a good board and good DDR5 now, you can get the cheapest Zen4 chip now and replace it later.

AM4 DDR5?

The AM5 CPUs haven't sold that well yet, so prices will come down either way. Personally I would wait for the non X versions. I have bought the 3600 over the 3600x, the 3600 did everything I wanted from it and was cheaper, like was said before it depends on your use case.

Hehe, here I am... bought a 5600X while I waited for the 7000 3D-V cache

Though, I picked it up on a promo and was quite the boost from my 2600

I am just using the 7700x until the 7000 3D- V cache myself

Yes it always depends on the price too, if the 5600 is not on sale and you find the 5600x on sale for 10 bucks more, why not buy it? Usually the 5600 on sale will be even cheaper though if you can wait and look for deals. In the end you're gonna save 20 bucks here or there, it doesn't matter too much for 1 component, but If you do it for 5 components you save 100 bucks. I like looking for deals I think it's fun, but it's not for everyone. Sometimes you just don't want to wait.

I think someone might say that the imperceivable difference between them simply isn't even worth $10.

Yeah I guess that is also a fair point, I usually lean towards saving some money, but often marketing still gets me anyways.
