I have just purchased the RTX 4080, which CPU and RAM would you recommend to go with it when the only purpose of the build is to play AAA games.

 

Monitor: 3440x1440@175Hz

A 13600K will fare as good, the 4 additional ecores of the 13700K won't change gaming perf, and the 200MHz additional clock can be gotten via OC

Does DDR5 improve gaming performance over DDR4?

Yes it odes, a bit (maybe +2 to 6%), depends on games/software

Usually not worth the additional cost yet (it'll be fine in 1yr+ with higher clocked and cheaper DDR5)

Yes. Since you are invested in next gen GPU it only makes sense to invest in next gen CPU and memory. Given the investment, saving a few % today may prove limiting in a year or two.

Would you say it's better to get 13900KF with DDR4 16GB or 13700KF with 32GB DDR5 for gaming only?

 

EDIT: I guess there is no point buying an i9 for a gaming pc.

An i7-13700KF with DDR5 would be my choice. I'd go for 2X8GB if necessary to get DDR5-6000 CL32 or faster memory.

For gaming get an i7 indeed

About DDR4 or 5 I do think that currently DDR5 isn't worth the extra cost, esp. on Intel where you won't be able to keep the board for next gen

DDR5 is currently expensive and not very good, most non outrageously priced sticks are 5000 to 5600 CL40+ to DDR4 3600 to 4000 CL18-, and DDR4 is dirt cheap

Overall you may end up getting better DDR5 in a couple years to replace DDR4, and for a total cost that may not that higher than DDR5 now...

no offense but this is terrible advice. 8gb sticks of ddr5 are garbage. They have less bandwidth than a 16gb stick by a lot.

Oh yes DDR5 also kinda force you to get 2x16gb sticks, ending up with 300% the cost of the 2x8 DDR4 you need

Apparently I wasn't clear. The advice was if 2x16GB at 6000+ did not fit in the budget, settle for 2x8GB.

right at that point better idea would be DDR4, since 8gb sticks of ddr5 suck so bad. I should know, I have a pair in an i3-12100f build lmao

If you are going for a DDR5 setup, do consider AM5. Yes, that is more expensive now than Intel's DDR5 options and a little bit weaker. However, AM5 has platform support up to 2025. Meaning your next upgrade costs next time can be limited to just a new cpu. The next intel generation will most likely be on a new platform, and will force you to buy a new motherboard as well if you want to upgrade your CPU.

If one is upgrading in two years I suspect the added cost of a new and better motherboard would be insignificant.

I would like to not have to upgrade anything for at least 4 years

My budget is at either getting 13900KF + DDR4 (16GB, 3600MHz) or 13700KF + DDR5 (32GB, 6000MHz)

 

I can also save money and get 13700KF with DDR4. I don't know how much DDR5 is needed for a gaming PC. I expect to not upgrade anything in the PC for at least 4 years.

I'd go then for the 13700kf with ddr5. It'll be a bit more future proofing. You do not need all the 13900kf cores for a gaming pc. DDR5 is not really that relevant nowadays, but might become so in the future.
