Z800 CPU cooler compatibility?

7 minutes ago, heimdali said:

Can someone tell if a CPU cooler for a HP Z800 workstation would fit a standard board like a Tyan S7012 WGM4NR?  I can attach a picture of the cooler if it helps.

(The fan connectors are 4 pin and probably won't fit, but I could replace the fans.)

Both are 1366 boards, so the should be compatible unless HP uses some weird cooling solutions or has both cpus cooled with one giant long brick. Either way you can get 1366 stock coolers used or even new for little money.

It's 2 individual CPU coolers.  That doesn't mean that HP didn't do something incompatible.

I could get two Coolermaster Hyper TX3Evo for 10 each, are those any good?  I have two Xeon X5690 that were supposed to go into the Z800 and those are 130W TDP.

I don't want to throw money at this but I'm very tempted to upgrade my backup server since I can get the board new for 50.  And I can still put the X5690s into the Z800 and use the CPUs that are in it now.  Then I could use the board from the backup server to built a router instead of running it in a VM ...

I'm kinda drooling at the board since weeks 😉

The coolers are fine as long as they fit into the case. I have previously mounted tall coolers with 120 mm fans into a HP server but I had to cut holes to allow the towers to stick out.

If you do not mind the noise, stock intel coolers would work as well but the cooler master ones are sure to be better and more pleasing to the ear.

It's a 5U case, so that should fit easily

I have 8x80mm Delta fans from an IBM server in that case 🙂  18 disks need some cooling.

But I have a fan controller which makes them run slower, so it's ok for the relatively short time it runs when making backups.  Stupidly, I have to adjust their speed manually because the fan controller doesn't go by temperature which was what I got it for.  It shows 8 different temperatures but none of the fans goes by temperature --- if stupidity wasn't limitless, I'd say the manufacturer can't be any more stupid not to control the fans depending on temperature.  I almost returned it, but it's better than nothing.  I wish I could find a decent fan controller that actually works.

I have a Z600, i am making the assumption that it uses the same coolers as the Z800.    I am fairly certain that the fans on those coolers don't use standard fan headers.    So to use the coolers you may need to replace the fans... and if you need to replace the fans (unless you have some extras) you may as well buy new coolers.

That's true ... These fans have connectors for 4 pins which probably won't fit.  I still have a bunch of the IBM fans left but they are a bit too small and it would just suck.

That would be 70 for the board plus fans.  Should I do it?  I don't need to do anything, it serves it's purpose as it is.

Hey guys so, still an amateur in building but I’ve been building a z800 unit for about a year now and I got the low power heaksinks with high power x5690 and I don’t want to fork out $400 for two high power heat sinks, I’d much rather spend say $120 ish for a different chipset. Would I have to get the x5680, or am I going to have to lower than that?
