HTPC Build

Go to solution Solved by Hakarune,

That's a pretty high spec HTPC. nice.

Upgrading from a Windows 7 based Skull Canyon Nuc to a more powerful, cooler, and hopefully quieter full desktop. A fair amount of the components have been purchased or are salvaged from on hand parts. Chassis is a SilverStone GD09B (can't find the C model, with USBC, anywhere). Platform is going to be my first AMD build since the FX-8350. Motherboard is a 2nd hand B450 Pro4. Currently have a loaner Ryzen 2600 and Wraith Prism installed to upgrade BIOS in preparation of swapping in a 5700G, which is finally at a reasonable price point. At the moment, I'm also running a single fan 1050 ti in order to have any type of display from the 2600. Haven't decided if I will leave it in or just run video off the 5700G as was originally intended. Will see once the new proc gets here and I can test it and the NH-L12S for noise. As the system will reside in a solid case I settled on some moderately fast but not flashy RAM. Boot OS is on a spare 512GB PM9A1 leftover from a client upgrade. I realize that it isn't going to realize it's full potential in a B450 board, but it works and the price is right. Game storage and DVR space will be handled by a 870 Evo 2TB 2.5". Blu-ray will be handled by the LG LG LG UN12NS40 from my old build. Am holding off on ODD installation until after the CPU swap because it would be in the way when I'm trying to take out the cooler and 2600.

1.0 Version of build is complete and operational. CPU installed, Noctua NH-L12S Heatsink arrived and is also installed. Bluray drive is installed and luckily working even if space is tight. Due to happy circumstances not 24 hours after the initial posting of this project, I was able to get an EVGA 3080 FTW3 for my main gaming rig. That means I can now install my old 2080 Super in this HTPC monster. That eliminates the need for an APU, which ALSO worked out because Micro Center had also lowered all the prices on CPUs for holiday deals. I had originally dropped ~$280USD on the 5700G but I was still in the return window, so I got a full refund and was able to then pick up a 5700X for ~$205 after taxes. Shout out to HP for having an excellent little problem solver. As you can see, the clearance between the CPU fan and the ODD is virtually non-existent. Enter the Sata to SAS right angle adapter that was able to slide into the gap and get the job done (PN: 587747-002). I also had to bend the ODD/HDD cage as the steel plate nearest the CPU heatsink initially prevented the cable from fitting in the gap. Since I am using a 2.5" SATA SSD instead of a full size desktop HDD for storage, I was able to get away with bending the plate out of the way. All I'm waiting for now are the final case fans: a NF-A12x25 next to the CPU, and one - maybe two depending on clearance - NF-A8 for exhaust. A couple of PCIE cables from CableMod are on the way too as I had originally sold the non-used PSU cables in anticipation of an APU build. Hope to get the cable management squared away with the final 2.0 version. So far Aida64 maxed out at 70C on the CPU.

THE GPU CABLES FINALLY CAME! Thanks CableMod! 1050ti test gpu is out, and HP 2080 Super is in! Gave up on cable routing, just not enough nooks or crannies to make it pretty. Plus, the sins are hidden by an opaque panel. Temps are great, never getting above 67 on the 5700X, or 73 on the 2080 Super during MW2 or Witcher 3 Next Gen Update. I was worried about losing IR remote control from my nuc, but I got IR control back via the Inteset PC-IRS5-01. Now I can power everything on with the same MCE settings my Harmony remote was already configured with. Not visible are the side and rear ventilation holes I created in the entertainment center for air flow.

It started out much more moderately. Planned on using an APU and debated using that for video VS my old 1050ti testing card. When I saw a 3080 for $540 all pretence went out the window. And my old HP card transplanted into its third system.

Lol. Good find.

My setup is very moderate, I just have an Azulle PC Stick as an HTPC that runs KodiElec and a Roku with Emby. I have a server for the smb/ntfs and docker with emby to serve the 4K/1080 videos to the TV.
