Perfect canidate for ubuntu. If you want an even lighter weight version of Ubuntu check out Xubuntu. It uses XFCE instead of Unity and has a much lighter weight UI. The biggest thing is under the hood they are essentially the same OS just different makeup.
If you really wanna go crazy there are even lighter versions of Linux around.
