On the new LTT livestream, Linus and company was making a big deal about the AMD FX-8350. I was thinking, if this thing is THAT bad, and I have an FX-8120. Since 8350>8120 then that must mean I have a REALLY shitty computer. Should I upgrade? Should I enter ROG RIG Reboot when it comes? What do you guys all think??

Nothing changed because they made a video and there's no reason to do anything when your computer does what you need it to do.

true true. I dont mind it, other than Davinci Resolve and VMs... and I got a job doing VMs so i need to upgrade anywyas

It's outdated, it's not necessarily true that it is unuseable or e-waste, but Bulldozer was a massive pie-in-face for AMD. having owned two different mobile Bulldozer/excavator APUs, it was a blunder.

What do you do with it? If you're trying to play the latest games its not gonna hold up very well but its still ok for lighter games and tasks.

If you upgrade you will have to swap out cpu, mobo, and ram. Potentially cooler as well if you're looking at ryzen 7000 or newer intel chips.

Although finding a good deal on an older cpu like a ryzen 5 3600 and b450 board is probably a good budget option.

There are quite a few people still rocking those old AM3+ machines. Run what ya brung. We can't all afford the latest and greatest, the reason I am taking a chance on a couple LGA1155 budget gaming builds out of parts I had laying around since I was unloading a Zen2 test bed anyway. Got a little deeper than I planned due to some unexpected pitfalls, but I think it will be worth doing. There's always someone that can use older hardware, and I know there are kids who would be thrilled with these machines as long as they could find games it would run (never really a problem, I still run old Sierra On-Line Quest games on DOSBox).

Quite frankly, I see more and more "parts snobs" these days. God forbid they use a machine that's more than a year old.

I don't badmouth others' input, I'd appreciate others not badmouthing mine. *** More below ***

I can tell you as a previous owner of a FX8320, that it will hold back even older cards like the RX 570 I still use.

It is a noticeable improvement in some games (for example Metro Exodus) and the system consumes much less power even though 5800x I have is still a 125w TDP cpu.

Being so much faster it can finish things faster and then go down to lower frequencies and save power - and modern processors have much better power management, so they go idle consuming much less power.

But indeed, the fx-8120 still works and if you only browse youtube and play some old games, you're fine, shouldn't be ashamed of it.

Fx processors are AWFUL and nobody should be gaming on them period.

They still have a use for an office PC or something very basic.

However, fx is HORRIBLE. It was outdated BEFORE it came out. Intel had the x5650/i7 980x/whatever on the x58 platform way back in 2010 and it runs circles around even a fx 9590.

Now, it gets even worse as you get newer obviously. The i5 2500k of the days when the Fx chips were new massively was better. These days it's horribly outdated too, but the 2600k is a beast still and was the best cpu to buy in the entire 2010 decade.

The problem with fx now is that if you're digging around you can find Intel Optiplex computers and a basic i7 from the 2012 era that will beat this.

Its not about video games for me. I got this rig when I was just using computers for web browsing and windows movie maker. Since then, I got employed at a travel agency, switched to Davinci Resolve and much more... My old cpu worked wonders for those older tasks but my workload requires a tad bit more power than that now; although it is a sick gaming rig (honestly nobody need 8k max settings at 360fps) nowadays, I dont play games much on computers, I mainly use older consoles as I find there replay value much higher than things like GTAV or Fortnite. I realize as my brain knowledge increases as I take more and more CompSci courses, so should my PC. I am going to go on a long rant about stuff like games, like shouldnt there be only 2 categories of workloads on PC? like entertainment and work be the only 2? like gaming does not need to be a separate workload it should be classified as entertainment.

BRO YOU DONT EVEN KNOW.... an FX processor would be HORRID for office use. Basic office use like word and excel should be reserved for things like pentiums and core i3s... FX Processors take SOOOOO much power and produce soooo much heat! their not bad for gaming I mean I can play the odd game of VR here and there which is a very power intensive gaming thing, but as I said prev. I only really use my PC for WORKSTATION use not gaming or spreadsheets and stuff. My gaming is for consoles and my spreadsheets are for my macbook air. My PC is for power intense tasks, and I honestly don't mind playing on consoles with shit settings as I play games for the fun factor not the good looking factor. Its like building a custom keyboard for the sound only not for the feel or response time or weight or resistance or typing experience or anything.

thats what im saying bro. I also think I may be more efficient at work with a better PC cause VMs and drive clones go brrrr. I get what your sayin for gaming and stuff, cause if you cant run new games then just get the older games, their just as good as the new ones. I need an upgrade because workstation workloads actively increase their requirements to an insane level. I just cant keep up! I think I need a rig that can keep me going for another 10 or so years before I need another upgrade
