hello i was looking at this used rtx 3090 ti for $938 on amazon and was wondering if it was a good buy. i want to overclock and i am looking to play most games at 4k ray tracing dlss enabled. i already have a 12900k that i bought a year back in december 2021. i live in the u.s. i’d like to keep the budget under $1000 for the graphics card. what is the optimal gpu here for my criteria?

 rtx 3090 ti ($938)

I think it might've sold in the time between copying the link and making the post, when I follow the link (which is broken btw, the amazon link has a bunch of stuff in front of it for some reason).

I would probably be waiting before buying a 3090 Ti, the RX 7000 series is only about a week away from announcements and should hopefully help drive prices down a bit on 3090 Tis, or you could then get one of the newer AMD cards instead.

With a bit of patience you can get ones a fair bit cheaper on eBay. I'd just do that.

Ehhh I wouldn't. The prices likely won't be much better, and I'd worry about the drivers, as with the first gen of any new design.

Can used or refurbished graphics cards be defective?

Absolutely.

You're covered when you buy from eBay.

You're also "covered" with Amazon, however if it's a third party seller sometimes it can be tricky.

Fun fact: new cards can also be defective (DOA).

Is it worth paying the extra money for a brand new card or should i save the money and buy a refurbished/used card?

Only you can answer that. I always buy used.
