External SSD or HDD for long term storage

Well the thing with the SSD is that the data is written as analog voltage state in NAND memory cells (MLC). And that voltage is leaking, the hotter it's, the faster it's leaking.
So if the SSD do have some form of refresh NAND algorithm (not all have, and I don't know which have it), they will just rewrite the data to other NAND cells when they have the power (that's why you shouldn't store SSD without the power).
Other's just use strong multi layer error correction algorithms, but they will be all useless, if all cells voltage drops.

In the HDD, you have bit rot and bit flip (just the magnetic things if they are near), and bearing not lubricated, because of prolonged storage.

how long do you want to store it? and in what condition?

The tape is good, but expensive...

Hi, I think my current external HDD is dying cause whenever i view videos on it they flicker like crazy and sometimes it wont even load them. I think I got it in 2016-2017 but im not so sure. I want to buy a new one, I will primarily use it to store important photos and videos. Should I go for an external SSD or HDD and do you have any recommendations? I read somewhere that external HDD's can be powered off for much longer than external SSD's but I have no idea if this is true or not, I just want it to last for a while.
