Freesync monitors with Nvidia GPUs

Hello,

I plan on buying this specific monitor MSI Optix G27C7 and was wondering if Freesync would also work with Nvidia GPUs since my system has an RTX 3060 installed.

I use freesync with my rtx 2080 just fine. I am pretty sure that nvidia added freesync support to all of their cards a long time ago.

 

Just enable G-sync compatible in the nvidia control panel and you should be good to go.

If it does freesync through displayport then yes the 3060 should be able to make use of it. If it does freesync over hdmi then you are screwed and won't be able to run freesync or "gsync compatible" that nvida limes to call it.

It'll probably work, but looks like some confusion going on in the thread.

 

"G-Sync Compatible" is an nvidia certification for a display that means it has been tested to work well at some quality level. It is detected by the drivers and enables variable refresh automatically. It can work over both DP and HDMI, at least HDMI since Ampere generation, not sure about earlier.

 

Generic Freesync only displays can be manually enabled for variable refresh in the nvidia driver.

So does it means G-sync is specific to Nvidia alone while Freesync is generally applicable to all?

I don't know all the details but on nvidia side there's two general types: native G-sync and G-sync compatible. Native G-sync (used to?) only work with nvidia GPUs, although I hear newer ones might work with AMD too. It isn't something I ever looked into deeply. G-sync compatible essentially uses similar underlying standards as FreeSync. Again not something I looked deeply into but I'd expect AMD GPUs to be able to use G-sync Compatible displays.

 

FreeSync is an AMD trademark. In the past they didn't exert any quality control over it though, so it could be on any junk display. G-sync compatible has always had quality requirements. Things have got better so probably not a problem with either these days.

Got it, so i guess it really won't matter much whether im using an AMD or an Nvidia GPU
