Asus Prime B450 M-A and Ryzen 5800X 3D

Go to solution Solved by PH7030AL.PH5030AL,

The Prime B450M-A uses 4C10B/4C06B mosfets for  its vrm, while it is a really low end vrm in the grand scale of things is adequate for the 5800X3D if running at stock settings. The 5800X3D consumes 108-120 watts at all core load at stock power settings, and consumes even less at gaming. Also, undervolting is an option if you want even lower temperatures and power consumption.

But in the future, consider stepping up to a better B550/X570 motherboard. I got myself an Aorus X570 elite for just $112, and some adequately equipped B550 motherboards like the MSI B550A-Pro/ B550 mortar(if microatx) are priced around near it.

Hello,

I currently have these specs:

Asus Prime B450 M-A

Ryzen 3600

Aegis 32GB 3000MHz

RX6800XT

Corsair RM850X

I am looking to upgrade my CPU to a 5800X 3D. I am wondering if my MB would be able to power the 5800X 3D. My 3600 is overclocked to 4.0 all core with an automatic OC from Ryzen Master and it seems my VRMs are the limiting factor here. I do NOT want to OC the 5800X 3D.

The reason for the upgrade is that the 3600 just can't keep up with the 6800XT. I am also aware that I am running my GPU at PCI 3.0, but the performance benefit of PCI 4.0 seems negligible, and I would avoid upgrading my MB if possible.

Yeah, unfortunately my budget was pretty tight when I bought the PC originally. I upgraded my case, PSU and GPU and added another 16GB of RAM relatively recently.

The only thing I would upgrade my MB for would be to get another M.2 slot, but I don't think it's worth it that much, I might just get a SATA SSD at some point. It'll be used for games only anyways.

Thank you for the insight.
