How does battery saving mode work?

Hey guys, I have a question:

 

What actually changes when you turn on energy saving mode on you Phone? 

 

I have Pixel 5 and when I turn on the battery saving mode, i feel like nothing changes, except that it actually has longer battery life compared to when i have it off. Subjectively, everything works just as fast. Is this black magic?

Battery saving modes can save battery in several ways. Typically, it reduces the time that it takes for your screen to turn off. It also will usually change how app refreshing works, one example would be with an email app - sometimes it will extend the intervals at which it checks for mail or even make it manual to check emails only.

If the Pixel behaves similarly to Samsung phones in this regard it will cap the CPU at 70%, limit refresh rate to 60Hz, and turn down a few other things.

Often also blocks some backgound tasks/network accesses, so you may for example not be getting notifications for some apps.

Yeah, what you guys wrote so far would have also been my guess. But do you think it's even worth turning it off? I don't really game on my phone, so i probably never need a lot of CPU power. Are there  any draw backs turning one saving mode all the time?

Other than less performance, no.

I wouldn't keep it on if you get emails that are time sensitive.
