what board to choose for ryzen 5 5600x

hungrykoala

this is my existing build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TLnKGL

I'm only upgrading the board and cpu.

I'm buying locally and have been calling up my local stores for their stock and so far I've narrowed it down to this:

for the new build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rJvYwc

this 2 doesn't need a bios update

ASUS PRIME B550M-A (WIFI) II

MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX

the list below needs a bios update

MSI B550-A PRO

MSI MAG B550M Mortar

MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk

MSI MAG B550M Bazooka

I'm more inclined to go with the 2 that doesn't need a bios update since I'm not sure if the store will update the bios for me and i'm not that confident in doing it my self.

I'm a software developer and part time gamer.

Those in the list are all within my budget. I just don't want to spend money for a board with wifi when I don't need it but might have no choice because it seems to be the most compatible one.

also, there's a chance i need to stay with micro-atx because i think i lost my extra standoffs so I have to look for them if I go with an atx board.

thank you for your feedback.

None of the B550 boards should require a BIOS update at this point. It's also not that hard to do, especially on boards that support BIOS flashback. Basically download the BIOS, extract it, (possibly rename it), put it onto a USB stick, insert it into the marked USB slot and press the flashback button.

I just based it on what pcpartpicker prompted whenever i selected one of those boards.

These motherboards all have the Flash BIOS feature. The BIOS can be updated without a CPU installed.

PCPP shows a warning for a lot of things because they can't know for certain. But it's fairly safe to assume that all B550 boards that haven't been sitting on shelves for the past 2+ years have had their BIOS updated ouf of the factory already.

thanks just noticed the flash button on the rest of them thought it was only the MSI B550-A PRO that had it. though I can always ask the shop to update the bios if it's not yet updated as well

They're all fine boards. I typically pick based on e.g. does it have enough USB ports for my use case? (or some other feature you need like 2x LAN port or 2.5 Gbps etc.)

If so, how is it priced comparatively. If two are priced the same, pick the one with more ports or other nice to have features.

Might I suggest you consider an Intel i3/i5 12th gen and a board for that platform? The 5600X is a bit outdated if you're not planning on upgrading to a 5800X3D.

If you are going with just a meekly 5600x i dont really see why get such expensive boards when amds main advantage at this point is being able to buy used dirt cheap yet decent used b3/450 or x3/470, the decent boards go somewhere around or below 60$ like a b450 pro4

If you wanna go with a new board just go intel, itll atleast still have some sort of upgrade path even if you likely wont even use the upgrade path

that's a valid point, and you're right i don't plan to upgrade for a while after this one and I don't really mind a lower priced mobo.

Does anyone know if all of them in the list support secure boot for windows 11?
