my gpu is covering the pcie 1x slot and I wanted to install a wifi extender is there a fix to this? ty in advance

Free solution would be to just use another PCIe slot if there's one available, it doesn't need to go into a 1x slot, you can put 1x cards in 16x slots. 

 

Non free solutions would be to either water cool the GPU and get it to be a single slot thanks to a GPU water block or see if you can find a low profile enough PCIe 1x riser that you can sneak it under the heatsink of your particular GPU, though neither of these solutions are necessarily practical.

Align the notch, then plug the wifi card into an x4 / x8 / x16.

 

The red circled portion of the pic below goes into the left side partition of the PCIe slot.
The purple circled portion of the pic below will be outside of the PCIe slot.

Riser cables work, as long as the case is big enough to be able to mount the card outside the motherboard footprint, or if your card has a low profile bracket. 

 

You can insert a riser cable into that x1 slot and then route the ribbon cable or usb cable (some riser cables use a usb cable instead of a flat ribbon cable) down towards the bottom of the motherboard. 

If your card is standard size with regular bracket, normally you would want to screw the card on the case outside the motherboard footprint so that the riser cable connector can sit nicely in that empty space under the motherboard. 

If the card comes with a low profile bracket option, then you can put the card with low profile bracket anywhere.

 

Keep in mind you can insert a pci-e x1 card in any slot, so you can put it in the bottom pci-e x16 slot if you have any.

Also, be sure to read the manual, as on some motherboards that pci-e x1 slot right under the video card may get disabled if you insert a card in another slot or if you use a 2nd nvme SSD. It's not guaranteed to be always working.

That small portion next to the 16x is for PCIe power and device detection/negotiation, not data. It will fit in there something like this:
