Hello.

This is my first post on this forum, found the Youtube build video's helpful. I am currently running on my first build which is as follows

CPU: AMD A10-5700 Trinity 3.4GHz (4.0 turbo)

MOBO: Asus F2A850v PRO

MEM: Adata XPG V2 8G (2x4)

HDD: WD Black 1Tb 7200rpm 64MB cache 3.5in.

CASE: Corsair 540 air black

GPU: EVGA GTX 660 FTW 2Gb

PSU: Seasonic 750w modular 80 + gold

CPU COOLER: Corsair hydro h110i 280mm radiator W/ dual noctual 140mm fans

Cougar orange case fans (1500 rpms? who can tell)

OS: Windows 7 64 pro.

Far as I know, everything is running at full. Seems to be running fine other than the odd Catalyst Control Center error message I get at start up because I'm using an Nvidia gpu instead of Radeon. I am currently planning a switch to Intel because AMD just gives me that feeling that you get when you buy a used car off some dude on craigslist, kinda iffy. The purpose for this post is to ask for recommendations for a motherboard, set of ram, processor, and an ssd. (maybe sound card, not sure if they offer any help in gaming in processing the sound). I plan for this to be a gaming/school computer but a bit overkill for both, maybe not 11, but 10.75 on the volume scale (currently this system gets 5.9 windows experience due to the HDD being a HDD and not an SSD, otherwise minimum 7.2 on the CPU). I plan on doing a lot of BF4 on ultra high, and ALOT of Minecraft world editing and voxel sniping. I would like something that can overclock.

My issue with my current motherboard is that I just don't think its exactly right. It says that it can run 4.0 turbo, but I have no idea how to tell if it is when I am in game, and I am still heavily dissatisfied with my render distance on minecraft (I would like to be able to max out optifine). Now my goal is to end up with dual GPU (probably another 660 for now, then down the road upgrade to dual 780's) SLI, an overclocked (nothing too extreme) processor, a fast set of at least 16 gigs of ram, and rounded all off with a good SSD. My budget is limited but this is a long term planned switchover, so I will be buying the motherboard, processor, and SSD first. I would like to stay under 300$ on the motherboard, and the same for the cpu and ssd. As for the ram I would prefer 2x8gb to start off with so I can add another 16 and end up with 32. I do not plan on doing a custom water cooling loop, at least not for a good while (definitely someday).

I am partial to the Crucial tactical tracer ram. I appreciate any help this community can give me, thank you.

That whole used car off of craigslist thing... Is one of the strangest things i've ever heard.

Case: Corsair 460X RGB bby, CPU: I5 8600K, Motherboard: MSI B360M PRO-VDH, RAM: 8GB Hyper X 2400MHz , Graphics Card: GTX1060 6GB, PSU: Corsair RM750x,

Cooler: BEQuiet!  Pure Rock Slim SSD: Kingston 240GB, HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda

I've got the same case. How do you like it?

If you're going Intel, the popular choice is the 4670k and a nice Z87 Motherboard (so you can overclock). Both of them together would be around/over $300, but you can find deals or pick a different CPU (you can probably find a Sandy bridge K or Ivy bridge K CPU for cheap then get a nice z77 board).

I'd also hold off on GPU upgrades. Nvidia is close to releasing the 8xx series cards.

Why do you have catalyst installed if you're running a 660?

Specs are on my profile page

I forgot to add that I'm looing for rock solid reliability, a bit of bling factor, and future proofing. Oh and this is more of a switch out of the mobo and cpu, than anything else, I will be doing a data transfer from the hdd to the ssd after making a backup and wiping everything but the os from the HDD. I do plan on adding more noctua fans, also maybe a an extra hdd as well as filling out this case's ssd slots.

catalyst is installed because it came installed, was running for a while just on the processor's apu function (that no longer being used part of the reason) Can I uninstall it safely? didn't know if I should or not because it's related to the processor. and the whole used car thing, I don't know, amd just makes me feel iffy, intel is considered to be higher quality, have higher compatibility and better support (or so that's what I've always been told). I was planning on getting a 4770k but if the 4670k will work just as good i'll take a look. I do want something with hyper-threading because Its going to be implemented in games sooner or later and I'd like to be ready. When are the 8x cards coming out, and what are they? Would I be better off to just get another 660 before then? my current one is sli ready.

PS: I love the 540 case, running sooooooo much cooler than my first case, the azza genesis 9000. Also does anyone know what direction the fans on a gtx 660 blow? it has two fans, not blower style.

I plan on keeping this case for now, if I upgrade its going to be something like the haf x stacker or the corsair 900d. My main trouble is deciding on a motherboard, newegg's idea of best rating is whatever got the fewest reviews and highest starts, I want the motherboard that got the most reviews and most 5 star ratings.

Ignore the Windows experience index. It is about as irrelevant as it gets.

At best, HT is ~30% better than no HT. For gaming, the difference is generally within margin of error. It isn't worth spending more money for the i7 unless you need the threads.

Intel isn't necessarily higher quality--same goes for AMD. Cpus are one of the most well-regulated and high quality components for a part to the point where the quality isn't really relevant.

I think the 8XX series was rumored to be released in June--not sure.

Unless you can grab another 660 for cheap, it's not recommended to get another for sli.

Where are you shopping/located? Budget?

So basically my budget is nil. I'll probably end up buying 1 part every month or 2. Which is fine with me to be honest. I'm going to be upgrading to an ssd this week actually (cannot wait, have been told that my mind will be blown). Getting a Samsung 840, not sure which yet.

I do want HT because while it isn't in use in most games now, I feel it along with a really nice set of ram will help me in my work in building extremely large things in minecraft (along with the SLI) with world edit and voxel sniper. Minecraft as far as I've always heard is a very cpu intensive program, for instance I build large things with a lot of lava, each block (and we're talking tens of thousands or more) have to be rendered, and even if they aren't rendered on my screen because they aren't visible, they still exist within a certain range and so they damage they do, their flow, etc, must all still be calculated.

I appreciate the advice and I will probably end up holding off on the SLI then. Also I want HT just because I can say I have the latest.
