About a month ago I upgraded my service to 1 gig. I use a Google Wi-Fi as my router which only has two ethernet ports so I installed a switch so I could feed the internet signal to other devices. I am with distributel and I've never had a problem with my internet before however since the installation of my 1 gig service I find that every few days I lose my internet connection. I usually just reboot the modem and everything works again for a 3 or 4 days not ideal but it works. Yesterday I noticed there was a person working on the internet live outside and he has shut down my internet. He said that there was a problem with my line and it was causing noise? My internet line was causing noise that was interfering in others in my neighborhood? He left and never came back. My ISP didn't know anything about it and they said someone would come over Sunday or Monday to fix the problem. What should be causing this so-called noise.

Something inside your house is causing ingress into the lines. Can be many different things. Some of the more common ones are LED lights and grow lights, but could also be stuff such as HAM Radio and such depending on the upstream frequencies your ISP uses for its upstream channels. Usually these are between 15-40mhz range but can vary depending on the configuration they're spec'd for.

Well I do have a lot of LED lights. I don't have any radios or grow lights. I don't think I have any machinery running. Do you think it's just coincidence that this started happening after my new service was introduced?

in the networking world there is no such things as coincidences. Was a new splitter installed when you had the service upgraded? I assume a new modem was put in place. Sometimes if splitters arent capped/terminated to block the open ports they can cause the ingress as well.

If your internet is delivered via Coax, Coax basically carries an RF signal. You know what else is RF? Broadcast TV, Cellular phones, WIFI, etc. Cable companies use the 5 Mhz to 950 Mhz generally however they can use up to 1.7 Ghz if they choose. Those bands are the same bands that are used by other services. T Mobile for example owns parts of the 600 Mhz band, which falls in to the bands used by the cable companies. If your wiring or any connector is damaged, then it can introduce outside noise in to the cable system. The cable company will track down this noise and isolate it. Sounds like they track down noise to your home.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I'm not sure what they would do then to fix the problem. I've been here 5 years now and this is the first issue I've heard of. I guess we'll wait and see what happens

If the issue is on their side of the network they fix it. Remember outdoor wire is UV resistant, not UV proof, so wires go bad after a few decades. If the issue is with in your home, thats generally your problem. Generally this involves replacing cabling/connectors. That all being said, it could be something as simple as a open port. What I mean is, if you have lets say a 4 port splitter but only use 3 ports of it, that open port can introduce noise. Ive seen people use a splitter to extend a wire before, its stupid shit like that, that causes issues. The proper way to extend a wire would be a barrel connector. The cable operator will be able to track down where the noise is coming from.
