I'm playing Doom (1993) from Gamepass and I keep hearing a xylophone sound and can't figure out where it's coming from or what's making the sound. I've looked it up in the manual and nothing about it seems to be online anywhere. It's about as annoying as the mouse controls lol, but hey, that's the 90's for you. I'm doing Inferno: Limbo standing int he main area. Is it the teleporters making that sound?

I played this game when it was new and I don't remember anything like that.

Are you sure it's not one of those annoying Windows notification sounds?

I did a quick recording of the various sounds for reference... If it's one of these, that's likely what you're hearing.

I don't badmouth others' input, I'd appreciate others not badmouthing mine. *** More below ***

It's most defiantly not a windows sound. Go to 0:38 seconds in the video and you'll hear it. I'm just wondering if it's some secret I'm missing in the game or it's just some annoying chime that means nothing.

Do you have any aftermarket audio hardware installed? The music sounds a bit different, so I'd say what you're hearing is picking up health, ammo or weapons. It sounds a bit more eloquent than I remember, but keep in mind that my audio hardware back then was a 16-bit Sound Blaster, and today's on-board audio hardware is 32 or even 64-bit, any aftermarket is likely to be 64-bit. Even back in the day, there were huge differences between PCjr / Tandy 3-channel DAC, 16-bit Sound Blaster, and 32-bit Roland MT-32. And on-board audio these days blows even the MT-32 away.

ADDED: Side note, there is an options menu where I think there is a section to adjust the levels for different sounds if you find it that annoying.

I don't think that's the thing. I'm playing on gamepass on a computer I built. There's nothing wrong with the audio coming from my PC seeing as I've played this game on several computers and it all sounds the same. It also sounds the same on every YouTube video and I can stand still in the game and the sound will still play.

Strange. The teleporters in that older version always made sort of a zapping-whooshing sound, not anything like that. Are you playing on a more difficult mode where it constantly spawns, or dead enemies reanimate?

Well, I'm playing on Hurt me plenty and I plan to raise it up to the hardest soon because god damn is it easy after playing Doom eternal on the same. Sorry, anyways I haven't seen anything respawn, but the sound seems to be nowhere near a teleporter. It was also happening in an earlier level where there were no teleporters at all. I just can't remember what the level was called. I could probably look through the game files and see if I can track the chime down, but that'll probably take forever lol.

LOL.... Oh, you haven't seen anything yet... Death Incarnate requires the god mode cheat (IDDQD), because dead enemies reanimate and I think they keep teleporting also. Without that cheat code, you'll last about 30-60 seconds, trust me.

Does the sound play when you've killed all enemies and aren't moving?

I'm looking forward to the high blood pressure. I just beat the Icon and I'm going back through the game to find all the stuff I ignored at first. I'll work my way up to the absolute hardest shit that game can offer.

And yes, the sound plays then as well. Admittedly but embarrassing, I was actually running around that whole level after I killed everything and picked everything up looking for the exit when I kept hearing the chime. That's when I got curious as to what it even was and started googling it and coming up with "doom eternal xylophone" and shit that was used to make the (awesome as f$%^&) DE music. that's not what I wanted so I looked up the manual which I found, but it doesn't mention this chime at all. Also, looking at a 1993 manual was a blast lol I would have been 3 years old. I looked on YouTube and heard everyone making lets plays of this game having the same sound play, but no one mentioned it. No one questioned what the sound was. I even left a few comments, but never got answered. I know how comments on YouTube work, so I understand why nobody would have even seen it. I run a channel myself at 25k. I get it. So I said f%$ it and came here to bother you guys lol. I'm rambling, I know, but I figured why not give you my search history so you don't have to.

edit: I'm also a little sleep depraved.

I just downloaded an old demo to check it out and I don't hear anything like that. I presume you're playing it through Steam. Is there some kind of online Steam chat room in-game or something? (Ipresume the Steam version is GZDoom, which may have some other features). Could be people in a live chat room for multi-player, as I remember this game had the option to do mutli-player and you basically frag each other to see who can rack up the most kills. Perhaps you're being invited to a match?
