Windows 11 task manager CPU usage

Go to solution Solved by GuiltySpark_,

This is why in-place upgrades are sometimes not a good idea.

That being said you have a bunch of crap running in the background and I'm certain if you started the machine up in safe mode, you wouldn't see this issue. Hell you might want to start with disabling all but the absolute essentials in the Startup tab of task manager and rebooting.

This issue you're seeing isn't inherent to Windows 11, its likely a result of the upgrade + an old and possibly not well maintained install of 10. A clean install is always preferred.

So I have upgraded to windows 11 recently and I have experienced issues right away. My CPU usage is 100% in task manager and when I check usage in NZXT cam it is usually below 15%. Is it a windows 11 task manager bug or my cpu is running at 100% always. Before I upgraded to windows 11 cpu usage was below 40% all the time. And cpu temperatures are higher than usual. Does anyone knows how to fix this, or should I reinstall everything and boot a new windows?

Please help I don't know what to do

My PC specifications:

  • CPU - Ryzen 7 3800x (Cooled with NZXT Kraken Z63)
  • Motherboard - MSI Tomahawk B550
  • GPU - Asus TUF RTX 3080
  • RAM - HyperX 32GB 3200MHz
  • 900W power supply

These are pictures from task manager and NZXT cam:

How long have you left it after upgrading?  I seem to recall Windows 11 doing a lot stuff in the background after an upgrade that eventually calms down.

ASUS B650E-F GAMING WIFI + R7 7800X3D + 2x Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30-36-36-76  + ASUS RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) Backup: GL.iNet GL-X3000/ Spitz AX Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz) WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz)
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~1200Mbit down, 115Mbit up, variable)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

I upgraded it 2 days ago and left it for 2 or 3 more hours after installation.

I have disabled all services running in background (expect Microsoft services) today but nothing changed. Maybe my last option is to reinstall everything

The applications using the CPU in your screenshot are what you should have disabled. Preventing them from starting using the suggestion above would be a start.

I moved to 11 for new systems a year ago so that's what I would do, especially if you're going to wipe it anyway. Either will work.

Thank you so much. I was concerned if I'm going to damage my CPU but fresh installation would fix problem I suppose.

Just because a CPU is running at 100% all the time it doesn't get damaged. What would damage it would be too much excessive heat or too much voltage. But not 100% usage. But as the other people have said, disable autostart for the programs that you don't need to have started on login
