Hi Everyone. I have moved away from Windows 10 as my main Plex server, but I loose backblaze. Is there a cheap alternative that can hold 20TB of movies and work on Linux? I moved to Ubuntu Server, but I'm thinking of going to Proxmox instead. I started to host Bitwarden, Nextcloud, and a Minecraft server. Like a good pal, Windows made sure to destroy some movies during the data migration. I don't want to use Windows as a server anymore. Is there any inexpensive backup services? Most of the pricing is astronomical. I can't afford to use B2 or many other services. Backblaze home was my best option, but Windows bugs out and has frequent crashes when it is powered on for months at a time. Thanks for your help!

Backblaze has an S3-like API that you can use on linux: https://www.backblaze.com/b2/cloud-storage.html

Other options are Wasabi, and if you want to go with the DYI route, BuyVM.

EDIT: my bad, just noticed that you said that you can't afford B2, then you're better off using a windows VM just for backups.

Are you running Ubuntu as the storage server? Would be doable.

Here was a video I used setting it up on truenas.

And their info on b2

I use B2 to backup my actually important data, about 3TB worth. The rest of my many TB’s of data, (ya know, linux ISO’s and stuff), I just figure, if my RAID Z2 dies, I can always find those ISO’s again. But my actual personal data that matters to me…. I just use B2 and not stress about it.

That is a great video, thanks! I set this computer up as a Plex server, modded Minecraft server, and I also host Nextcloud and Bitwarden. I kind of use it for everything. My main issue is that backblaze B2 is expensive, but it looks like they are probably the cheapest cloud storage provider. The biggest reasons why I didn't install TrueNAS is because I can't install my TV tuner drivers on freeBSD and I am not familiar with BSD.

you could run a windows VM to handle the sync to backblaze, I have a windows VM that runs my security cameras (Blue Iris only supports windows... insert sad linus here), unfi controller, shared printers, and a file sync program I can't seem to remember the name of that also only runs on windows. There are other useful things to use the windows VM and this way you can keep a very similar method of backup to what you had before. Not the most elegant solution but a cheaper option then B2

Forgot to mention, the backblaze desktop client works under wine too, so you could give it a try.

Backblaze doesn’t let you backup network locations…. For this exact reason. Need to use B2.

You can mount a folder through virtio as a file system inside windows, it'll appear as a regular disk drive and not a network mount.

Wait, what. Run this by me again. What would the setup be?

Setup virtiofs on your host:

http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/9p_virtio

Then, for a windows guest, use this thingie to mount it:

https://virtio-fs.gitlab.io/howto-windows.html

Done.

Oh cool. I run truenas tho, currently BSD based. Once I go to scale I will need to give this a more serious look. That’s neat!
