How should I use a AIO to cool my GPU without killing it - again

Full story below but how would I use an aio to cool a rtx a4000 without my gpu dying? I don't know what the problem was last time but hopefully someone can give me some advice on this so I don't make the same mistake(s?) again.

Spoiler

A few weeks ago I bought a rtx a4000 cheap used. Under load temps were very bad (85-110C) idle temps were not that great either (50-65C). I disassembled the card, removing the stock passive cooler and the holes were so perfectly aligned to use with my old 360mm aio so I bought long enough screws with nuts and I screwed the aio onto the gpu in place of the stock cooler. PC booted fine and temps were down to 25C idle.40 seconds later monitors shut off, I assume I killed the gpu somehow although I have no idea how, moving it to a different slot and putting another gpu in the slot to get a display output the computer doesn't recognize it although the gpu fan spins it the gpu doesn't actually work. I know the proper way is to use a waterblock made for the gpu but I don't have custom loop money so this is what I have.

You used a CPU cooler to cool a GPU?

Maybe the card was in a bad way since you got it so cheap?

Now another GPU won't work in the slot?

Watercooling a A4000? It's ridiculous

EDIT didn't read the whole story, then it makes sense but I think the GPU just died, not because of your cooling

Another gpu works fine the the same slot I put the same aio on my old 1070 ti just to see if it'll also die, it didn't. Still confused why the a4000 died.

did you have cooling on anything other than the die? Memory, Power delivery, etc.
