Best headphones that aren't overkill with onboard audio

spy_crab

First time poster, so here goes nothing.

I've recently managed to break my old headset and I'm looking to get some really nice closed back headphones for everyday use (gaming, watching videos/movies, listening to music while I study...) for when I go back to university in September.

The catch is that I'm only going to be using my ROG G14 gaming laptop with it's regular audio jack while I'm there, so I'm not sure how fancy I should go. From looking at some other posts here it seems like going in the headphone rather than gaming headset direction is better, since I have a standalone mic. I have no real experience with high end audio gear or if I should even be looking at such gear in this situation. Any suggestions or pointers would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't get anything expensive for school. Check out the Beyerdynamic DT770 for closed back. This is a good headset for at home use. I wouldn't travel around with headphones this large.

In my experience, the ATH-M20X has a more realistic timbre than the DT770 pro, more detail, and the quality control of audio-technica is better than Beyerdynamic's anyway.

I've used both to listen to lossless music, the Beyerdynamic is less valuable in my experience.

Rode NTH-100 is my favorite pair of headphones right now, only reason I don't use them 24/7 is that the modmic attachment fell off them and I'm out of the double sided tape for it.  They run on anything and sound good doing it.
