i got a thermal problem with my dell e6420.

TeddyStark45

i have had thermal issues with my laptop recently and thought it was just old thermal paste. after all i hadnt used it in 2 years and i got it second hand to begin with. so i bought my self some thermal grizzly kryonaut thinking it would help. i got it today but to my suprise when i installed it the computer actually shuts down more!!! Throws that #m1004 code. i put a good amount on the die as to not spill over but do you think i put to little? i looked at the die on the cpu and heatsink of my laptop and i was able to see the die and copper through the paste. is it supposed to be like that? do i need more? Here are some pictures

Based on dell's website, m1004 is overheating issue.

Did you clean the fans and heatsinks as well?

Did you properly tighten the screws?

Any connector/plug/cable that is supposed to be connected but did not get connected?

Was the fans running?

I'd argue that the paste is a bit much, it spilled over the die.

I would suggest to use the Dell Diagnostic Test as well to check the processor and processor fan after you have applied the thermal paste again and reassembled the heatsink

Except there isn't really such a thing as too much BECAUSE it just leaks out the side, better too much than too little.  I'd say they used exactly the right amount.

It looks like that second copper block wasn't making contact at all.  If the chipset or VRMs were overheating, its going to shut down.
