I'm quite new to networked attached storage and was wondering, how does setting up any type of RAID in a NAS work? (As in how would you go about doing it?) Does the NAS work like a standard PC and have an OS?

Thanks,

Blueprint

Some NAS's will have a standard OS like Windows server. Or they will have their own variant of some form of LInux. It's not tot hard to set up. Looking in the manual will show you how. I could tell you but it's different per every NAS.

pre-configured NAS devices have some kind of DOM which the system is running on (you can change the RAID while the system is on). In some of the cases those DOMs are used as standard installer media and it's getting installed to the RAID itself and booting from the RAID after the first install (you set up the raid at your first boot). FreeNAS preferably uses an USB stick.

Amahi is based on Fedora, so it's installed like your home os. Windows should be obvious. Zarafa is Ubuntu based.

My builds:

'Baldur' - Data Server - Build Log

'Hlin' - UTM Gateway Server - Build Log
