Suddenly my PC has been overheating after months of use. I used to have normal temps and then suddenly a couple months ago I was having a memory issue, but during troubleshooting I replaced my thermal paste to be safe. Low and behold, a week or so later, I notice my CPU overheating more and more until the computer overheated it triggered a shut down. I then reapplied thermal paste again which caused temps to be ok again for a couple weeks until now. Suddenly, my CPU and CPU package are seeing extreme temperatures after sustained 30% load or more and just now, it overheated causing a forced shut down.

All three thermal paste applications came from the same tube of arctic silver from 2016. Should I try a new paste?

To note:

  • I have a 3700x
  • MSI Mag CoreLiquid 360
  • Lian Li O11 Dynamic
  • and 5 fans in the case
    • 2 intakes, and 2 exhausts
  • I never overheated until after replacing the thermal paste during initial troubleshooting for the other problem
  • The pump is working and fans do speed up/slow based on temps

Any help would be apricated. Thanks

TLDR: CPU wasn't overheating, reapplied thermal paste, now overheating.

Hello! This is unfortunately troubling and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that CPU cooler is subject to a recall for this exact issue. As soon as you can, get in touch with MSI customer support and attemt to get a refund for the product. Of course, you should also replace the cooler with another one.

Sorry about that but at least now you know. If you have any questions for me feel free to ask

Cheers! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's one of the MSI liquid coolers that is being recalled for, well, filling up with gunk for lack of a better way to describe it.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Thank you! I took a step out of the pc community for a bit and apparently missed this.

No problem! I'm glad I could have been of help. Fingers crossed you get a working replacement and MSI doesn't give you a hard time.

Take care and stay safe! (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

After finally getting the rad unscrewed, I put the serial number in and it says that I am not eligible. -_-

"Sorry, your product doesn’t qualify to apply for this swap program.

Please submit a web ticket and select Technical Support and Liquid Cooling in the category fields if you have any question."

Submit the ticket, get a human to look into your case. They may try to weasel their way out of giving you a replacement on grounds that the recall was issued a few months ago but that should have no bearing. The product is defective and you didn't pay for "defective".

Don't give up. Fight! ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ
