huzzah it works.. solution:

  1. pull out your hdd, turn on pc. hit it 5 times, put 2 drops of normal distilled water(sizzles ), bang it again, boom restart, work

So my old coot will be replaced 'soon'(as in 10 more years, so they say) i return home at night Friday and i started up my pc like usual, boots up to windows is starting screen but it stopped there, animation kept go on and sometimes activity led blinks a while but its over an hour its like that so i restarted and now its been 2 hours. i give up and ask the forum for help. the day before that(Thursday) it works like a charm but lately the shutdown screen has been a half and hour long. anyway to make Old Coot boot up?

I suspect dying HDD

any other suggestions? i cant just remove my hdd and buy a new one just because of a suggestion.

Well, hard to say. Everything you typed suggest dying HDD but everything here gonna be suggestion. Can you try it in another PC ? Like at friends PC or something ?

That make it so much harder for troubleshooting dammit :D I would like to help you, but you can hardly test Boot drive with only one PC. Only thing that came to mind is... you have two HDDs right ? Maybe try the other one ? I suppose you don´t want to loose the data, but we are kinda stuck.

Like I said in our PM thing, try to download the latest 64-bit Xubuntu distro and install it. It's lightweight, and should make your PC a decent amount faster. If you don't like the way it looks out of the box, I can show you some screenshots of the way I have mine set up, where it looks similar to Windows.

Yes, I once had a cheap HDD which died on me in the exact same way. Notice the hard drive LED will blink in a pattern. For me it would blick every 3-4 seconds and I would be suck at the Windows 7 boot animation. You WILL have to replace you HDD. It's inevitable.  <_<

darn, it isnt cheap. its a seagate barracuda 500gb, which cost me roughly 67 dollars. indonesian prices >.> they dont even have a year warranty just a week

Do you have access to a Windows DVD that you can use to try and repair the OS?

yep, but he has some stuff on the hdd so he wouldnt let me without his permission, even though the whole pc is mine

its so hard to reply in my moms laptop which the keyboard is covered with think rubber cover that sticks to your hand when you type, plus its loose
