Cloning HDD on smaller SSD

I have a Home Assistant server that runs on an old desktop with an HDD in it, I have a smaller SSD that I would like to clone it to in order to make the machine more responsive. However the server runs on Debian so I would need somehting that is able to hande the linux file system. I have had no luck with solutions like acronis and macrium reflect.

Use gparted from a live linux distro to resize the partition to be smaller than the target SSD, do the clone, use gparted again to enlarge partition to the SSD's size

This was partly the solution thank you. For anyone who would try doing the same thing it is possible that it breaks grub (it broke mine) just download boot-repair on a live usb (debian or ubuntu) and reinstall grub works like charm.

There's a boot-repair live CD, even quicker 😄

Good to have in your toolbox (has gparted loaded as well of course)
