The bios should only be updated if there is something wrong, or if there is a new feature in the latest one that you want.

In short. If everything is  running smooth don't flash a new bios.

Well my pc has now got coil whine coming from the psu and last time I think when I updated the bios it stopped but it might be because some of the power options iirc with my old motherboard I had to enable C- state and it stopped

My PC rebooted while flashing the bios update last night... All I saw after that was a blank screen when I turned on the computer... Luckily my mb supports bios flash through USB too, and all I did was put the bios file in a USB flash drive, plug it in the bios USB por, and press the refresh button while the computer was off and power supply connected.... The blue light blinked for 10 minutes and the corrupt bios was updated.....

Check if your mb supports it, and use it in the future for full proof safety.

Usually new mobos have somewhat older BIOS versions, so yes if you want newest you need to update again. Unless its same mobo you got. Why not check what BIOS version you are running?
