Hi
I just updated my BIOS on my x370 SLI PLUS. Now my Boot drive (m.2) doesnt show up as bootable drive. It is however recognized by the bios under the system status tab. It also shows the correct storage size there. Can this be a problem with the bios version?
Any Ideas, what I can do, except boot from a different drive?

Is the install CSM instead of UEFI? Bios might have defaulted to UEFI or CSM and is having trouble picking up the other one.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Can you explain that?
I dont really understand what you are trying to tell me

If your OS is installed to a M2 NVMe drive, it is required to be in UEFI mode before installing the OS from a UEFI installer.

You can convert a CSM/MBR to a UEFI/GPT install, but it's pretty involved https://www.maketecheasier.com/convert-legacy-bios-uefi-windows10/

Basically, if the BIOS sees the drive, then it works. It will not be listed in the boot list. Only the UEFI boot manager will, AFTER the OS is installed.

So if you had a UEFI installer for the OS, it may have installed the OS to the drive expecting a UEFI boot, which means if the BIOS is set to have CSM on (compatibility mode) then it will not boot in EFI mode.

Trust me, this is a mild annoyance even on HP/Dell systems. Basically if you are installing windows from a USB stick, you still need to boot the stick in UEFI mode for it to install in UEFI mode, otherwise if CSM is turned on, it will boot the installer that way.

You can NOT arbitrarily switch to and from CSM/UEFI mode. Switching this will ALWAYS break the install, which is why it's very involved.

My theory here is you installed a GPT partition while in CSM mode, and you updated the BIOS and it's defaulting to UEFI mode now.

So find the CSM option and toggle that on or off and try.

It's also possible (if it is indeed a UEFI install, but the boot manager is missing) to manually select the OS drive, and Windows will fix it on the next boot.

It's a question of what partition table the drive used when you set it up. If you just installed Windows 10 to the drive blank without ever configuring it, it should've used GPT (UEFI) and this will require you to be using a modern platform. If, for some reason, the drive is instead using MBR (CSM), then the BIOS will need to have "Legacy Boot Mode" enabled in order for it to work. Or vice versa - sometimes a GPT/UEFI boot drive doesn't like it when you have "Legacy Boot Mode" enabled and you have to disable it.

Basically, try toggling "Legacy Boot Mode" or "CSM Boot Mode" or "MBR Boot Mode" or "Boot Compatibility Mode" or whatever your BIOS might call it.

I was typing, but the other two beat me to it. For reference, in your BIOS, it's under Boot settings.

I think it was legacy+uefi before.
Now it is only "uefi". I also cant change it for some reason

Have you disabled W10 WHQL Support?

This item will become un-selectable and will be configured automatically by BIOS when Windows 10 WHQL Support is enabled

On a side note, it might be about time for a fresh install if you're on Legacy booting. If you even want to think about going W11, you'll need to not be in legacy anyways.

As you've seen and as @Kisaimentioned, legacy likes to cause some weird things.

Glad when it's simple things.
