Budget (including currency): £1k to £1.5k (British Pound Sterling)

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Blender, Unity, Maya, maybe a few games but not main priority

Other details: Wi-Fi not needed, will run on 1920x1080 60hz monitor, would be preferred mid-tower form factor, RGB and lighting not needed.

Try Scan Computers and PC Specialist (both UK based), they both have good configuration tools starting from a decent £500'ish base model.

You really want a decent CPU 11 or 12 Gen ( or AMD equivalent), something with 6 - 8 cores, helps with setting up scenes, modelling, animation etc.

32GB RAM (speed less important than size), SSD for system and apps, large HDD for assets, 3060TI or higher for rendering and viewport response, the more VRAM the better but 8GB should be a minimum and achievable in your budget.

Blender and I believe Maya both have support for Nvidia's CUDA and Optix, whereas AMD support is a bit lacklustre at the moment, although an AMD card would work if your budget allows for a decent one.

Check out Imphenzia's YouTube channel, he works in Blender and Unity with tutorials and tips.

If the PC is not meant to be super future-proof, could I get by with an i5-12600k? Or should I still go for something like the i7-12700k?

An i5-12600 should be perfectly sufficient, for your budget you are going to have to juggle a bit, cut here, add there, but remember the purpose of the system, so 32GB RAM (DDR is perfectly fine, 3000Mhz good enough), 8GB VRAM and as many cores as possible should be your minimums.

Unless you are using this for earning a living speed is not the main requirement, being able to model large scenes in detail with textures and modifiers and being able to handle animation data and undo levels comfortably is what you are after.

Would a 3060 be sufficient?

The VRAM for modelling is nice (12 vs 8), but again it is speed over power vs budget... would you be happy with the 3060 over the 3060Ti if you would also like to game?

Juggling time and maybe read some reviews of the cards performance in 3D apps, there are comparison charts for most CPUs and GPU combinations for Blender at least. 🙂

For the gaming, perfectly fine. An RTX 3060 Ti would offer better viewport and GPU rendering performance.

I included a PSU suitable for an RTX 3060 Ti equipped system. It really comes down to spending an additional £100 - £150 or not.
