Okay, I want to start this with saying that my friend has an old 285 and was saying it runs BF4 ultra multiplayer 1080p 60fps. I feel like he's bluffing, since even with my 770, its still a bit of a challenge to run 1080p 60fps ultra all day everyday.

 

 

What do you guys think

No 200 series card is worth it anymore. No 400 series. No 500 series. 600 Series only for the 660 new really, unless you get a good deal on a 670/680.

Don't, I will not perform any better then your 770, just save up for a second one if you need more horse power.

Considering the 660 ie 480/580 performance and lacking Fermi's compute performance, you are wrong, Fermi is now extremely affordable too.

660 is a little worse than the 580. I would not buy a 4 year old card. They run stupid hot too. I do believe the 660 will support DX12 while the 580 probably wont.

not really, its still hugely powerful and certainly gave my 7770 a run for its money, the memory bandwidth and texel rate meant it really can use 1-2gb of ram wheras my 2gb 7770 started to struggle when the textures/res started going up, bf4 start cranking it to high-ultra at 1080p started bringing it close to the 30fps (ish) mark.

I.e its a powerful card in the sense that it takes a lot to bring the fps down from say 60fps to 50, to 40.. etc you really have to crank it.

that said while some cards today in SOME games might outperform it in certain benchmarks if you start turning up the textures etc those cards can have the fps tank and seriously drop once the gpu reaches its texture/pixel/bandwidth limit

im guessing most cards that support dx11 will support dx12, it makes NO sense for some cards like say a gtx 770 to get it and not others, teh game API doesnt care what architecture you use so long as some required parts are there (like teselators) i dont know this as im not a programmer but the way the industry works is fairly simple and microsoft have been resting on the loins long enough now that since amd has shown people want it microsoft has stepped up and put some effort into it, with that in mind they are going to want as many people as possible to be able to us it.

There is no logical reason why nvidia would let the 580 have dx12. They want people to buy more cards and upgrade. 

 

quick change: just because it's capable of supporting it doesnt mean nvidia will let it.
