Hi all, I am going into aerospace engineering, likely going to be doing CAD and I already have done some programming, and am needing to upgrade (seriously upgrade) my PC. I am also a gamer, who likes to play new-title, high-graphics, FPS and RTS PC games. I was wanting some advice as to what processor I should invest in? I am not partial to Intel or AMD. Also what motherboard and graphics card would be a good fit?

Thanks in Advance,

WeTuLo

Are you planning on reusing the current motherboard and ram? I don't recommend it, given the budget you have set for yourself.

1TB SSD is a good amount of storage up front and you can always upgrade later.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

For your workload, I'd want to go either 12700 or 5900X. The 12700 is ~$100 cheaper, better for games, and performs about the same, but the fact there's a distinction between E cores and P cores makes virtualization a bit weird. If you are only gonna run 1-2VMs at a time, it would be my pick, but if you're doing heavy virtualization (I'm guessing not since it's just in VirtualBox) the 5900X would be the better bet. I'll make lists for both, but just know the the 5900X will be more expensive and a bit more consistent and slightly slower, while the 12700 will be a bit more inconsistent with performance but usually the same or faster than the 5900X.

For a GPU, I'd go 3060. It's not the best value card out there, but CAD programs tend to not like AMD GPUs and the 3060 comes with a lot of VRAM for the price.

I wasn't planning on reusing the motherboard, due to the fact that it doesn't accept a wide range of CPUs and also because I was wanting to give the PC in full working order to a family member to use.
