What are IOPs?

Hi friends.

Can someone explain me what this number and IOPs mean for me in "real life" use of this USB Pen drive?

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. "In-out operations per second" in a random pattern. Basically take a bunch of small files, scatter them across the storage and see how many the drive can read and write per second.

 

The higher the iops the better the performance for OS drives/game drives where the OS asks for little files all the time and the drive has to go and find them as fast as possible

4000 in/out operations per second, basically 4000 searches per second. Most high end nvme drives are in the 500k-1mil iops, sata ssds are in the 200k-300k, usb drives are tricky because they don't have a ton of nand(#of GB) to search through so high iops doesn't mean very much.

Hmm I don't need searches...what kind of searhces?

I just want this pen drive to have high write speed of small files,not like most of them where speed gets as low as 3-20 MB/s.

"searches" referring to what I mentioned before, when the drive has to look through the storage for files. The definition of IOPS. The drive can find and return 4000 tiny files per second from random places on the storage chips. The bottleneck for small files is typically the processor flooding the drive with requests making the controller struggle to keep up, which then slows everything down.

 

compared to a Sata SSD, flash drives won't do as well for small files, no flash drive does well with very tiny files due to the controller being much lower performing than almost every proper SSD. Your best option is a portable SSD like the Crucial x6 or x8 or the Sandisk ones (they use the same nand and controller as their Extreme Pro USB drive so that can save you a few $)

My best bet is going for a job with 3000 euros sallary not 600...

Don't you guys get it or I should write in signature I'm low on budget so I chose fast pen drive...those drives are 100 eur and above.

Or hell,my best bet cheap nvme+nvme enclosure...

Not exactly, 4K is the size of the block, 8000 IOPS is how many blocks the drive can randomly read/write per second. The drive still is going to perform poorly in random read/write operations regardless though.

So this pen drive has poor performance,much worse then lets say average SSD?

Yep, last column 10x slower speed, in other tests keeping good compared to average SSD (BX500).

But then again it's a pen drive...ofc I could use regular SSD as external, but too bulky.

This one screwed with my brain - SanDisk High Endurance MicroSD card https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Endurance-microSDXC-Adapter-Monitoring

 

It's all over the map, USB drives claiming USB 3.1 but can't keep up, MicroSD cards should be slower but are twice as fast. It really comes down to if you need pure speed, get an NVME enclosure and a small NVME drive or a portable SSD. Otherwise, try a bunch and return the ones that are slow?

I wish I could afford myself at least Samsung T5...for now I should try to satisify myself with this pen drive.

At least I hope it should be much better with slow regular pen drives with average write speed of 10MB/s
