5900X Cooling Needs?

Puglifeboy88

The current cooling should be fine.

I don't see where the Noctua NH-U9DXi4 is built for an AM4, only LGA platforms. Is that the correct model for your current cooler, OP?

That said, OP, I have a 5900X myself, and it is air cooled in a 4000X Corsair case (similar to your Phanteks). Six 120s and a seventh on a Scythe Mugen 5 cooler, rated at 51 cfm vs this cooler's 38 CFM. I see idle temps around 38-42C, peak temp of 76C under full load with an iCUE Commander COre XT and a custom fan profile, but was spiking around 87-88 until I got the fan curve tuned. I personally don't think a cooler with 13CFM less is going to quite cut it, and you'll need as many high-flow fans as your case will fit... I have three SP120s that came with my case and three LL120s that I added.

Also, you might want to check this link out as you plan any cooling changes....

I also wonder if that PSU is enough, especially for future needs.

or if I should get more.

There is no way I would run that little cooler and expect good results. Maybe on your 3400, but not a 5900. You will want to run something a little more... substantial.

Agreed. Even with the Mugen 5, my system hits 70C-75C inside of two minutes. Drops to about 55-60 within a minute, but takes about 2-3 minutes to fully return to 38C-42C idle temp.

Depends what you want it to do. If you're going to be using it for rendering or CPU heavy workloads then no it will throttle for sure. If you're just gaming then it will probably be fine. I've set mine to the 65w tdp profile and enabled pbo and curve optimizer while using a wraith spire cooler and it was able to keep it boosting to about 4.7 in game. However if you're only going to be gaming with it maybe just get a 5600x. A 5800x could be a good choice if you're going to be doing streaming or recording using the amd encoder on the GPU.

5600X is a great CPU. I have one and I love it. It is so easy to cool, and it runs like snot. I only bought my 5900X because I couldn’t buy a gpu at the time and I had free time and some money. I couldn’t part with the 5600X because it does 2100 1:1 lol.. a unicorn. So I built a rig around it.

That's pretty far off from 90c which is the throttle temp for the 5900x.

Yeah, it depends on whether I have PBO enabled though. 70-75C without, 80-85C with. 5-10C is cutting it a bit close, so I'm not sure if that's really getting into the danger zone or not. Of course, PBO really isn't necessary with a 5900X, so I'm torn. My biggest problem is my 60hz 55" display... and my cheapest option to correct that without squinting is anywhere from $800-$1600 for 49"-55" 144-hz models.

Why a 5900X? If all you're doing is gaming you'd see mostly identical performance on a 5600X, and potentially better on a 5800X3D.

Mostly because it will boost to nearly 5200MHz (5150) if you tune it right.

It's far from the danger zone and the CPU is designed to throttle to prevent damage.

PBO boosts aggressively and pushes temps fairly high. That's normal.

Guy's running a 6600. He's going to be GPU limited no matter what unless he's playing CSGO on the lowest settings at 1080p

Indeed.. when I got mine I was running a GTX 980 Classified because new GPU's were pretty much non existent in my neck of the woods. It was still fun to play with 👍
