is the 10900K worth delidding?

is it worth the risk?

I see that the difference can be around 10c

i have a 240mm aio and a gigabyte vision g and yes, I will overclock it once i get it in about a week

Delidding IMO is not worth it. To me its more of a "I am bored and I don't care if this CPU dies" scenario.

Well this is depressing now. You bought a 10900k in 2022 when the 12600k eats it's lunch for cheaper and runs cooler to boot.

upgrading my 10600K

If you actually read, you can see that I already have a Z490 Vision G

If I was thinking about buying a new pc, of I would've gone for the 12600K

its really cheap on amazon and has amazing value

but right now I need more cores and more cpu horsepower and my aio and mobo support the 10900K so why not?

its also the best cpu for LGA1200 and will be good for future gpu upgrades

my original plan was to upgrade my 10600K right before 10th gen disappears from the shelf, and the time is now

got it for 494 bucks

originally bought the 10600K for 369 bucks about a year and a half ago

ill see it for around 240 bucks (yes, its a reasonable price in my country) so my 10900K will actually be 254 bucks

10900k is a soldered IHS. A delid will have very little temperature difference, and honestly it might hurt performance if you still use the IHS.

If this was a 9900k, sure, then a delid will do 10C improvements, but delidding anything soldered is a bad idea outside of XOC stuff.

What country are you in where a 10900k is 494$?!?!?!?!?!?!?! In the states, I could get a 12700f and a mobo for cheaper than that

I did some test with my i9 10900k.

It was 5.1ghz all core overclock vs TVB.

TVB won in games and lost in benches.

TVB did not win in games against 5.2 and 5.3 overclocks.

My i9 10900k was stable at 5.3ghz but heat in some apps were an issue.

It uses an EK 360 now and would need a push-pull setup for 5.3ghz.

With the TVB setup my 5800x never beat the i9 and the 5900x only beats it in games that use more cores.

I gave my i9 10900k setup to my Son to use for video editing(with a 3090) and was going to use my old i7 8086k(5.1ghz) for gaming.

That lasted a week. The Intel 6 core felt too rough after using the 10 core so I built my i9 10900kf computer.

You have the motherboard so it is worth getting even with out a delid.

You could've bought an entire 12600k and Z690 motherboard for that price. Return that CPU and get a 12600k instead.

I live in israel

price here are indeed insane

the 10900K from amazon is 370 bucks

and 120 bucks shipping and handling

froma local store, the 10900KF is 570 bucks, or 495 from the tax free city which is a 5 hour drive from my house

a new, 12600K is 386 Bucks and a decent Z690 lite the aorus elite ddr4 is 312 bucks (a little discount)

so that basically 700 bucks, or, 600 bucks from the tax free city which is, again, a 5 hour drive from my house

How much is the 12700f/B660 motherboard? I cannot overstate how much better 12th gen intel is.

I know that its better

but I'm never buying a locked cpu and motherboard

I always use my hardware to its full potential and if ill go for 12th gen it will be a 12600K and a Z690 motherboard, probably an asus one since I prefer their bios now after I had a gigabyte board

If I decide to get 12th gen it will be a 12700K minimum

Don't want to go from 6/12 to... wtf do you call that? 10/16? 6/16? 6/12? I know that there are logical cores or some type of weird thing going on with 12th gen

I also saw that it works only on windows 11 which I'm not upgrading to (idk if thats right)

And my AIO is not compatible with LGA 1700 so yeah...

yet still

im not buying a b660 that'll throttle a 12700F

also, the 12700K has a higher clock speed which really matters in csgo

and a decent b660 costs like a z690

and in csgo I do see a performance boost

i also have a 240hz monitor so every frame counts

The scheduler for W11 works slightly better with the e cores and p cores of Alder Lake than W10, but you can for sure run Alder Lake on W10.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Most likely you will increase 10c vs lowering it 10c. Liquid metal and solder are very close in thermal conductivity.

The possible way to drop 10c is to eliminate the IHS plate and go direct die with a custom loop.

Not worth it. Your end cooling solution is ambient air temp. You'd be better off to lower that by 10c than to delid that chip.

Either way, good luck.
