Thunder 3 cable in DP Alt Mode?

Any C to C cable that's USB3/3.1.

My question is will a thunderbolt 3 cable work if my port isn't thunderbolt, but it does support DP 1.4 (DP Alt Mode)? Monitor supports it so it isn't a problem, but my laptop doesn't. Laptop model is Gigabyte G5 KC and Monitor is BENQ EX2780Q. Of course I'm talking about type c to type c thunderbolt 3 cable.

TB cables have transceivers built into the plugs that need to be talking to a Thunderbolt controller

That's only true for longer cables. (transceivers...)

 

The short ones under 80cm are just USB-C cables tested for 40gbps.
