Need to select boot drive repeatedly

Howdy,

 

Got to go check a parent's pc.  When I try to bootit, the system forces me to select the boot drive in the device menu (F8) every time.  When I go in the menu, all the drive are visible (including the default one).  I know it's an old computer.  Any idea if this is a hardware problem?  If it's a problem that means the lifespan of the computer is about over?  Troubleshooting tips?

What is the boot order set on the machine if any?

USB (like for a usb stick with Windows on it)

SSD (the regular one where Win10 is)

HD

remove all other boot options from the boot order. (in the bios)

CMOS battery... like the battery on the motherboard? (I can troubleshoot baisc stuff on hardware but it's trial/errors without vocabulary).

If so, is it easy to find/change (it's my old computer I gave to that parent and the motherboard is a 12 years old SABERTOOTH X58 with i7 960 on it).

12 years is enough time for a CMOS battery to go dead. Most are a flat-type battery most often used in watches / remote controls. Shouldn't be too hard to find on the board, and they simply pop out and pop in. My guess is the CMOS battery is weak and can no longer hold the boot and drive info when the system is off. I found an image of a Sabertooth board, I marked the location of the battery...

Will go try and find a battery of that type right away!  Thank you very much for the help!
