So I RMA'ed my graphics card to Gigabyte as I figured enough time has passed since their ransomware incident. The graphics card fans rev a lot when it gets hotter and it sounds like (at times) there's either a fan bearing issue or excessive coil whine.

The card behaves like this in my PC and when I gave the card to a technician to install in his test bench he reported the same issues to me.

But when I check my Gigabyte RMA status it says: "No trouble found after tests with multiple configurations"

And when I called Gigabyte, the employee I spoke to said the same thing so all I could do is email them back and provide the video clips of what my graphics card sounds like when gaming. I have already provided them these clips numerous times so not sure what else I can do.

Do you have any advice for what I can do in this situation? I'm going to be so pissed if they ship it back with no resolve.

Gigabyte is a Company with a bad reputation that I personally don’t trust anymore. When your GPU comes back and it’s just coil whine sell it quickly and get an Asus. I only have used Asus GPUs and Asus Never fucked me over when I contacted them.

From what I've heard a lot of modern Gigabyte GPUs have this due to the way it's designed. Because most of their cards do this they probably say it works fine.

Really the only thing you can do is play around with the fan curve, most people with this issue only have it when the fans are running at a specific speed.

Also Gigabyte's support is like the worst. About 50% of bad experiences I hear is from them. So if it actually isn't what I think it is it's probably just them trying to save money by not fixing it. Not saying that other AIB's are much better but Gigabyte is certainly the worst imo

Yeah Asus has been decent too lately. That wasn't the case a few years ago. Same for MSI, they also improved over the last few years. Still imo EVGA and XFX are better in terms of support (I don't recommend XFX currently due to them selling mined GPUs as new). I think ASRock also has great support, but some of there products are just hot garbage, especially the newer ones (yes they make GPUs, for AMD)

The graphics card started showing this issue a little over a year and 3 months after I bought it. The only reason I got Gigabyte is because all the EVGA's were sold out every where at the time which is the graphics card company I prefer to do business with. Kinda don't know how to work with the fan curve thing and I don't know why I should need to when the card didn't behave like this initially. They are telling me they can't replicate these issues which has to be bullshit. If it happens on my computer and a second IT computer test bench it has to be happening at their facility too.

Maybe you're right -- that they're too fucking cheap to want to fix this issue and they figure they can just fuck me over by telling me there's nothing wrong with it. Would a company really do this though?

Well, It's the fan revving issue that pisses me off the most. You can hear it in the video. Once the card gets to a certain temperature the fans kick in and it sounds like a fucking leaf blower. It's the most obnoxious shit because it starts and stops, starts and stops. I usually go with EVGA. I dunno about Asus. I really just want them to fix this shit but I don't know what else to say or do?

Yes absolutely. You have to remind yourself that gigabyte is a company that made power supplies that exploded and they new that and sold them anyway.

That's true. I forgot about that incident even though It's relatively recent -- though I wasn't sure if they sold them while knowing the PSU's were fucked -- are you sure on that? I was however aware of how they treated customers after the fact though. But dude, this card was like 900+ dollars. There has to be something I can say/do to not get fucked? I'll be damned if I'm gonna spend another $900+ on another graphics card so soon especially since this card is still under warranty! Because I probably can't even buy the same card for this amount of money these days. Maybe, maybe not - I have heard prices have gone down a bit. It's a 2080.

You should be able to adjust the fan curve in Afterburner. Not sure if that's still the case as I use AMD software, but there should be a button to change it there.

But since the issue started a year later it is probably a faulty GPU. If you bought in Europe the retailer should be able to help RMA it. Chances are that Gigabyte will fix it if you do this, because they know retailers won't sell something with bad support.

They definitely knew it. GN made a video about it and iirc Aris noticed it too before GN, and they commented saying they tested wrong when they didn't and customers left reviews of it exploding (about 50%) while they kept selling. That tells me they definitely knew it. Afaik it's still not fixed, but not as bad as the earlier units. It took months of them knowing about it before recalling the units, and they didn't even recall all affected units.

Nah, I bought the card in Canada. What do you think is wrong with the card (From the videos I linked)? What would YOU say to Gigabyte if you were in this situation?

Yeah in that case RMA through the retailer probably won't help.

Honestly I don't know what to do here either. All I can think of is maybe you can ask them for proof that it works fine during their tests?

Still, if noises like this happen but don't have an impact on the function of the product, they have the rights to decline the RMA because technically it just works fine. It's a pretty difficult situation tbh and I do kinda understand their response. Still if I were them I would just fix it because chances are that customers won't buy their stuff because of issues like this.

It sounds like it's just in need or a fan curve adjustment. It's like 5 seconds to do.

Coolers get dirty, stuff run hotter. It sounds like you are right on the edge of where the fan curve jumps up. Adjust the curve or clean/repaste.
